Understanding Procrastination: The Motivation Myth and Action Steps

Written on

Chapter 1: The Motivation Fallacy

Let’s be honest—I’m currently writing this as a way to avoid studying. In reality, I should have been writing as soon as I started my workday. Instead, I got sidetracked by a Netflix episode while having brunch after breakfast. (Had I started writing earlier, I could have begun studying sooner.) Although I haven’t mastered the art of overcoming procrastination, I would like to share what insights I've gathered thus far.

Section 1.1: The Illusion of Motivation

It's true that people often feel motivated to complete tasks. However, no one waits for a surge of excitement to head to work; they simply go, even when they lack enthusiasm. Motivation is fleeting, much like the waves of the ocean. Relying on motivation to take action can lead you down a perilous path, making you think you must seek it out through YouTube videos or self-help literature. This mindset can easily trap you in procrastination.

Section 1.2: The Swing Trap

Imagine yourself on a swing.

Swing metaphor representing motivation and action

The higher you push off the ground, the higher you swing. Similarly, the quest for motivation feels like an attempt to gain momentum, but this often leads straight into the cycle of procrastination.

Chapter 2: Moving Beyond Motivation

What if you didn’t have to depend on motivation at all?

The swing trap presents a false choice: no motivation? Then procrastination ensues, leading to short-term dopamine fixes. But what if we pivoted? No motivation? Use a pattern interrupt and take action instead. By letting go of the need for a particular feeling to act, you can show up consistently, even on tough days. Ultimately, results don’t care about your emotional state; they care that you put in the effort.

This first video by Dr. Andrew Huberman discusses effective strategies to stop procrastinating and enhance motivation. It provides valuable insights into breaking the cycle of inaction.

Section 2.1: Pattern Interruptions

So, how do you break the habit of procrastination? This is where pattern interruptions come into play! Traditional methods like the Pomodoro Technique, block scheduling, and the Eisenhower Matrix can be helpful, but what if you're too stuck to even start them? If you find yourself spiraling deeper into the swing trap, consuming one motivational video after another, you may end up feeling guiltier and more disheartened.

As I mentioned earlier, I haven’t fully figured out the solution yet. However, I recently came across a Twitter thread that offered some intriguing ideas:

  1. Poor emotional regulation is often an underestimated factor in procrastination.
  2. The key might be improving your ability to manage your emotions.
  3. If fear arises, recognize it as a mental distortion.
  4. Break tasks down into manageable steps and focus on one at a time.
  5. If you feel overwhelmed, disrupt the feedback loop by engaging in a simple activity—take a shower, go for a walk, or do a few push-ups right away.

In the second video, Andrew Huberman offers practical advice on effectively overcoming procrastination and self-motivation techniques that can lead to lasting change.

To sum up, you don’t have to rely on motivation to take action; that’s how you get caught in the swing trap. Before you slip into procrastination, try breaking the cycle with a quick burst of physical activity, like doing ten jumping jacks or sprinting around your home.
