Should You Hold Off on Buying an iPad? Here’s What to Know

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Waiting
As speculation about new iPads intensifies, a pressing question arises: is it wise to postpone your purchase?
Sitting here with my two-year-old iPad mini, which is new to me but not so new in the market, I find myself contemplating whether to stick with it or wait for the much-discussed 2021 model. The potential upgrades, such as a sleeker bezel, mini-LED display, and a refreshed design (though some recent whispers suggest otherwise), are certainly appealing. Additionally, any new iPad mini is likely to feature the A14 chip instead of the older A12. Oops… I mentioned the chip.
However, as I reflect on this, a key question keeps surfacing: why should I wait?
I rely on my iPad mini daily, and despite its bulkier frame and older processor, it has never let me down. In fact, I've truly enjoyed using it. It has become an indispensable part of my daily routine. Sure, I might be tempted by the sleek, new gadget (if it ever hits the shelves), but do I genuinely need it? Absolutely not.
Numerous articles and YouTube videos caution against purchasing the current-generation iPad at this moment. Yet, I can't help but question the validity of that advice. If you want an iPad now and need one for immediate use, what advantage is there in waiting for an uncertain release timeline?
Take, for instance, the iPad Pro. Rumors suggest a new model could be unveiled imminently (though it could just as easily be delayed for months; after all, there were earlier “confirmations” about new iPads appearing in March…). If the gossip is accurate, the forthcoming iPad Pro will primarily showcase mini-LED technology, enhancing display quality while reducing energy consumption. It may also sport a more powerful variant of the A14 chip, rumored to rival the formidable M1 chip found in MacBooks (who knows, they might even include the M1 itself). There are whispers of an updated Magic Keyboard as well.
Nevertheless, the 2020 iPad Pro is still a phenomenal device; while it may not have a mini-LED display, its screen is stunning. It arguably boasts the finest tablet display available today. The A12Z processor handles any task with remarkable ease. Battery life across current iPads is outstanding, and the existing Magic Keyboard accessory is arguably the best keyboard designed for an iPad. If you were to purchase it today and Apple announced the 2021 model next week, the differences would likely be negligible enough that waiting wouldn't be justified, especially if you're eager to start using it. After all, when comparing the 2020 iPad Pro to its 2018 counterpart, the advancements were noticeable but not groundbreaking enough for every 2018 owner to feel compelled to upgrade.
Of course, you might consider that the prices of current iPads could drop once their successors are released, which could be a valid reason to delay. However, I doubt the reductions would be significant right away, and unlike the iPhone, Apple doesn’t continue selling last year's iPad models once the new versions are available. So, if you're waiting for that reason, your window of opportunity will be quite limited, only lasting until retailers clear their inventory. And let’s not forget about the iPad Air, which I can confidently say is cheaper now than the 2020 iPad Pro will ever be while still maintaining a similar form factor (at least for the 11-inch model… apologies to 12.9-inch users).
Another consideration is that a newer iPad will likely have a longer lifespan than older models, receiving updates and support for a more extended period. However, Apple provides long-term support for all its devices; for instance, iPadOS 14 is compatible with the iPad Air 2, which debuted in 2014. Besides, many users, including myself, will probably trade in their current iPad for a newer model within 2–3 years, well before the device is no longer supported. And again, if you desire the iPad Pro's form factor (11-inch) but want something that may receive longer support, the iPad Air, equipped with the latest A14 processor, is only a few months old.
I'm not dismissing the potential value of waiting for the next iPads. They will likely offer some noteworthy enhancements over the current versions; after all, that’s typically the case. However, at this juncture, there are numerous rumors regarding what features will be included and when they will be available, yet we truly can't ascertain how groundbreaking—or incremental—the upcoming iPads will be. The existing models—whether you're considering the Pro, Air, base model, or mini—are all exceptional tablets that can serve you well for years of productivity and entertainment.
If you’re considering purchasing a new iPad today, I genuinely believe there's no need to wait. Of course, you can if you want the latest and greatest, but what’s available now is already impressive. If you’re in the market for an iPad today, don’t let the naysayers deter you; go ahead and make your purchase.
