# Strategies for Rapid Promotions in Product Management

Since beginning my journey as an Associate Product Manager in 2014, I have experienced a promotion every 1 to 2 years, culminating in my current role. While some might say luck played a part, it was actually a combination of strategic planning and proactive efforts to create opportunities.

Section 1.1: Leveraging Side Projects

Every Product Manager comes from diverse backgrounds—whether in technology, design, or business—leading to varied strengths and weaknesses. Early in my career, I grappled with impostor syndrome, feeling anxious about filling the gaps in my knowledge. The truth is, mastering every detail of your role isn’t necessary; understanding the core concepts is what counts.

The two most effective ways I’ve addressed my knowledge gaps are:

  • Engaging in side projects.
  • Gaining experience through on-the-job learning.

It’s quite rare to acquire all the skills you need solely from your day job. For instance, you might want to incorporate cutting-edge technology like ChatGPT into a product, but your company may hesitate due to its novelty. I strongly advocate that every Product Manager should pursue side projects, even if they seem unrelated to their current role. The skills you gain can prove invaluable in your primary career.

Here are a few examples of my side projects:

  • Air Quality Monitor: Learned about consumer and industrial design.
  • Real Estate Marketplace: Gained insights into conducting thorough market research.
  • Bluetooth Water Bottle: Discovered the challenges of achieving product-market fit.
  • Smart-City Technology: Realized the complexities of hardware development and the lengthy sales cycles involved.

It’s common to hesitate due to fears of asking "stupid" questions or believing that technical knowledge isn’t your responsibility. However, even partial understanding can provide significant insights and allow you to contribute meaningfully to discussions with your technical colleagues.

Recognizing your gaps is essential. Are you more comfortable with technical tasks but struggle with stakeholder management? Every Product Manager has areas for improvement. Addressing these gaps can set you apart in your field.

Section 1.2: Advocating for Promotions

Throughout my career, I’ve observed many talented Product Managers excel without securing the promotions they deserve. The key? They often fail to explicitly communicate their aspirations.

To advance your career, don’t hesitate to ask for a promotion right from the start. Here’s how to navigate that conversation:

  1. Schedule a meeting with your manager to discuss your career goals.
  2. Clearly outline what you believe is needed for a promotion.
  3. Document these expectations and revisit them regularly.

When it’s time for your promotion discussion, you’ll have a solid foundation to present your achievements and demonstrate your readiness for the next step.

The "Thanks" Folder

One useful strategy I’ve implemented is maintaining a "thanks" folder. This is a collection of compliments, recognition emails, and notes of appreciation from colleagues and stakeholders. When preparing for a promotion discussion, this folder serves as your personal highlight reel.

Promotions don’t happen by chance—they require strategic thinking, determination, and a strong belief in your value.

Navigating a career in Product Management is akin to climbing a mountain. Each role presents its own challenges and rewards, and understanding what it takes to progress is crucial. Here’s a breakdown of the typical career ladder in Product Management:

    • Daily Tasks: Data collection and analysis, supporting PMs, user research.
    • Promotion Criteria: Proficiency in data tools and insightful contributions to product discussions.
  2. Product Manager
    • Daily Tasks: Overseeing product development, crafting user stories, stakeholder engagement.
    • Promotion Criteria: Successful product launches and effective cross-team collaboration.
  3. Senior PM
    • Daily Tasks: Managing product lifecycles, mentoring junior team members.
    • Promotion Criteria: Delivering impactful products that align with company goals.
  4. Principal PM/Staff PM
    • Daily Tasks: Navigating domain-specific challenges, influencing product strategy.
    • Promotion Criteria: Recognition as a domain expert and significant impact on product direction.
  5. Director
    • Daily Tasks: Leading product teams, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
    • Promotion Criteria: Strong leadership and consistent achievement of product goals.
  6. Sr. Director
    • Daily Tasks: Steering multiple teams, setting overarching product strategies.
    • Promotion Criteria: A proven track record of product success and industry leadership.
