In high school, I began my day with a weight lifting class before the first bell. During college, I played football, which required me to hit the gym every morning at 6:00 AM. For the past 24 years as both a teacher and a coach, my mornings have started at 5:30 AM in the gym. I manage to work out five to six times a week. This connection to the gym has become essential for my mental well-being, even if I’m not as muscular as I could be. My priority has shifted from achieving a specific look to maintaining a sustainable routine.

The Importance of the Journey Over the Destination

In the past, my workouts were driven by the desire to bulk up and enhance my physique. I was fixated on lifting heavier weights and taking various supplements. However, as I've matured, my perspective on fitness has evolved. Now, I find joy in the act of exercising itself, rather than just the end results.

I cherish those early mornings, dedicating time solely to my workout. It serves as both a physical and emotional outlet, preparing me for the day ahead or helping me release the stress from the previous day. This workout time has become sacred. I refrain from engaging in conversation, fully focusing on myself. I prioritize my needs and goals, even if that means not greeting others.

As a teacher, I interact with students constantly, and my gym time acts as a recharge, similar to powering up a device—vital for maintaining my energy levels at school.

Sustaining My Fitness Routine: Key Strategies

How have I managed to keep up my workout routine for three decades? Here are some strategies that have worked for me.

In my mind, the gym is an integral part of my workday. As a teacher, there are specific times when I don’t have classes. On those days, I skip morning workouts. However, on the first day back after breaks or any unexpected day off, I’m back in the gym at 5:30 AM without question. This mindset has been ingrained in me.

I don’t spend excessive time at the gym; my workouts last between 30 to 40 minutes. I once believed that longer sessions were necessary, but I’ve since learned that this isn’t sustainable. Articles like those by Sara Lindberg emphasize the effectiveness of shorter, consistent workouts.

While I still engage in weightlifting, my approach has changed. I focus more on moderate lifting than on maxing out weights. However, I discovered that my workouts became more enjoyable and sustainable when I stopped subconsciously comparing myself to others. My focus is on my own internal peace rather than competing with those around me.

Despite the competitive environment of high school gyms, I made a conscious choice to train at a 24-hour facility where I wouldn’t be distracted by competition. This environment allows me to focus solely on my own progress.

The Value of Working Out Alone

Many suggest finding a workout partner for accountability, but I’ve always believed that true sustainability comes from internal motivation. While having someone to encourage you might help initially, lasting habits must stem from within. My success in maintaining a routine is due to my personal commitment to my fitness journey.

Finding Time for Fitness

A common excuse for not working out is the lack of time. As someone who arrives at school by 6:45 AM and typically goes to bed by 9:00 PM, I’ve found that prioritizing my schedule is crucial. I wake up early to ensure I can fit in my workouts; exercising after a long day simply doesn’t work for me. Research indicates that mornings are often the best time for sustainable fitness routines.

I’ve also come to appreciate my Apple Watch. While I don’t feel the need to share my workouts with others, tracking my progress keeps me motivated. It even recognizes when I’m working out and prompts me to log my activity. I love seeing my daily step count, especially during football season, which justifies my early bedtime.
