Improving My Life Through Morning Pages: The Power of Handwriting
Written on
The Morning Routine of Writing
Each morning, I dedicate time to writing three pages in a simple notebook using my fountain pen. This exercise allows me to express whatever thoughts cross my mind.
There are few guidelines I adhere to: I must continue writing until the pages are filled, and I cannot edit or censor my thoughts. Beyond that, anything goes. At times, I find myself immersed in a single subject, while other moments lead me to jump from thought to thought without coherence. Regardless, the primary goal is to fill the space on the pages.
I have no intention of revisiting this writing. It won’t be shared with anyone else. Once the notebook is complete, I simply discard it and start anew. So, what motivates this practice?
The purpose isn’t to create a lasting record; rather, it’s about clarifying my own thoughts and emotions. By the end of my three pages, I often confront topics I would rather avoid—issues that I tend to ignore or fears related to the future and regrets of the past.
While I’d prefer to push these thoughts away and lock them away in the deepest recesses of my mind, the commitment to fill three pages compels me to confront them. The inability to censor my writing means I must acknowledge these feelings.
Although I won't read what I've written, the act itself allows my mind to start processing these underlying thoughts.
Improved Sleep Quality
Since I began this practice, my sleep has significantly improved. I find myself spending less time worrying and more time drifting off to sleep. I feel less scattered and distracted when I need to concentrate.
In the past, my journaling consisted of a page or two a few times a week, but that was insufficient. Writing three pages forces me to engage more deeply with my thoughts, especially those that arise when I’m trying to rest.
I am still working on the next step—addressing these concerns with others—but for now, acknowledging them within myself feels like a significant step forward.
