Getting Ready for My First Apple Watch: A Long-Awaited Journey

Chapter 1: My Apple Watch Anticipation

After a long wait, I'm finally about to experience my first Apple Watch—what's a few more days in the grand scheme of things?

In the past, I didn't quite understand the appeal of the Apple Watch. Seven years ago, when it first launched, I was already entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, using Macs and iPhones alongside various Apple services like Apple Music and additional iCloud storage. Despite my loyalty to Apple, I had never adopted the iPad or Apple Watch into my routine.

While I have owned iPads, like the iPad mini on my desk, they never quite fit into my workflow. I prefer macOS for its drag-and-drop capabilities, multitasking, and the ability to manage multiple windows and tabs simultaneously. My M2 MacBook Air meets all my mobile needs, but the Apple Watch is a different story altogether.

I’ve actually purchased two Apple Watches before, but neither was for me—they were gifts for my daughter and girlfriend. Now, after last week’s exciting Apple event, I’ve ordered my own Apple Watch 8! It features a 45mm face in Silver Aluminium, paired with a midnight Solo Loop band.

What can I expect? Apple Watch users seem to develop a deep attachment to their devices. It's hard to tell which is more essential to them: the iPhone or the Apple Watch. With just a 10-day wait until my watch arrives, I can’t help but wonder what it will bring to my life.

The various bands also seem to make a statement, and I look forward to customizing my watch face whenever I feel inspired. The durability of the Apple Watch is also reassuring, especially given my regular routine.

Chapter 2: A New Beginning

As a younger person, I was heavily involved in sports, almost reaching professional status in cricket and competing nationally in bodybuilding. Exercise has always been a significant part of my life.

Though I became somewhat lazy in recent years, I rediscovered my love for outdoor activities during the lockdown. Now, in my middle years, health is once again a priority. While it may not dominate my day as it once did, I want to ensure I maintain a basic level of fitness.

Section 2.1: Health Apps and Monitoring

I’ve always been self-motivated and never needed a personal trainer for guidance. However, I hope the data from my Apple Watch will encourage me to push myself further.

Using the ECG app to check my heart health and monitoring my blood oxygen levels post-COVID are features I eagerly anticipate. The new temperature sensor may not be immediately useful, but I trust Apple will enhance its capabilities in the future.

Chapter 3: Fitness and Wellness

The Workout app piques my interest. I’m curious about its various views and how they can help me track my heart rate zones and cardio sessions. I believe I get three months of Fitness+ with the watch, which will allow me to explore audio-guided walks and meditation workouts.

Section 3.1: Sleep Tracking

I recognize that I need assistance in improving my sleep. As a light sleeper, I typically only get about 5 to 6 hours of decent rest each night. I’ve never monitored my sleep before, but I’m hopeful it will motivate me to improve my habits.

I’m particularly interested in how it tracks REM, Core, and Deep sleep, as well as how often I wake up during the night. While many people I know shy away from using the sleep app due to discomfort or charging concerns, I’m eager to give it a try, especially with the improved battery life and low-power mode on this version.

Chapter 4: Safety Features

Apple is cleverly tapping into our anxieties about safety. With the introduction of Crash Detection alongside Fall Detection, it seems like they want us to feel irresponsible if we leave home without our devices. The Apple Watch 8 can detect severe crashes using an advanced 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and other sensors, which will automatically contact emergency services if needed.

Chapter 5: Streamlined Convenience

Although I didn’t choose the cellular model, I appreciate that my Apple Watch will allow me to leave my phone in my pocket more often. I rarely carry a debit card anymore, and I find Apple Pay incredibly convenient.

Now, I’ll be able to make calls, send and receive iMessages, and stream music and podcasts directly to my AirPods Pro 2—all without constantly reaching for my phone. Navigating with the Apple Watch also seems promising.

I’m curious about how I will adjust to the 45mm screen. I’ve always preferred larger displays, so reading messages on my wrist will be a new experience.

Chapter 6: Final Thoughts

It feels fitting that I’ve waited so long for my first Apple Watch. This model embodies the latest technology, with impressive battery life and a fast processor. Any initial issues with health apps have been resolved.
