Getting Fit When Your Life Depends On It: A Personal Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: The Wake-Up Call

Today brought some unfortunate news—news I’ve been dreading to hear. After some tests, I learned that my cholesterol levels are alarmingly high. If I don’t make significant changes, I could face serious health risks like heart attack or stroke.

As I approach my 40th birthday, I consider myself reasonably fit, but my eating habits leave much to be desired. I indulge in sweets, candy, and a lot of butter—far more than I should.

Adding to my concerns is my family history; I may carry a genetic condition known as Familial hypercholesterolemia. This condition affects my ability to process cholesterol and is tied to a defect on Chromosome 19. There’s a 50% chance I have this condition, and I will undergo further testing in three months. My goal is to significantly reduce my cholesterol levels before then, and I'm ready to take decisive action.

This is my three-month strategy:

  1. Running Commitment: I plan to run a total of 300 miles over the next three months, starting with an 8-mile run tonight to kick things off and ensure my cardio is on track.
  2. Dietary Changes: I will limit red meat to just once a week, replacing it with chicken, oily fish, and nuts.
  3. Healthy Alternatives: My pantry will be stocked with whole grains and tofu, while I’ll eliminate all fried foods.
  4. Vegetable Focus: I intend to dramatically increase my vegetable intake.
  5. Supplementation: I will be taking B16, Niacin, and Vitamin C supplements.
  6. Cutting Sugars: All added sugars and white flour will be removed from my diet.
  7. Dairy Dilemma: Unfortunately, this means saying farewell to dairy—goodbye, beloved pizza.

Not only will this help me get into better shape by my next test, but it will also reveal whether these lifestyle changes can positively impact my cholesterol levels. If I see improvements, I may not have the genetic defect after all, but if not, at least I’ll be approaching the need for statins in the best physical condition possible.

The notion of mortality often hits hard when you least expect it. While I’m not in immediate danger, the early deaths of both my grandfathers weigh on my mind. I want to live a long, fulfilling life; I neither smoke nor drink and strive to care for my health. Perhaps my current habits don’t reflect that commitment, and I’ve been fooling myself into thinking I’m healthy. Reality can be a harsh teacher, but I’m determined to improve my fitness along this journey.
