# A Year with Apple TV 4K: Insights and Reflections

Last year marked a significant shift for us as we said goodbye to Sky, the UK's most well-known satellite TV provider, and transitioned to the Apple TV 4K. This was my first experience without access to traditional satellite TV in nearly two decades. Naturally, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension about relying solely on Apple TV for our entertainment needs. My girlfriend, who has endured many of my tech experiments, shared in my nervousness.
Previously, I had boldly suggested that Apple should consider discontinuing their Apple TV device. This opinion sparked a passionate defense from its users, highlighting my occasional misjudgment in assessing a product without fully experiencing it. After a year with the Apple TV 4K, I can confidently say it has transformed our viewing habits, although it comes with its own set of challenges.
Section 1.1: The Watch Now Feature
One of the standout features of tvOS has been the "Watch Now" function. This feature provides seamless access to Apple TV+ content, which continues to impress with its high-quality programming. Apple’s investment in entertainment is paying off, and the convenience of watching the latest episodes of our favorite shows has been a welcome surprise.
My girlfriend quickly adapted to "Watch Now," finding it to be an intuitive part of her viewing routine. With so much available content, this feature serves as an excellent reminder to catch up on ongoing series. However, not all streaming applications integrate with the "Up Next" feature, and the absence of Netflix in this regard has been a point of frustration for many users.

While the Apple TV offers a sleek interface, it lacks the familiar channel-hopping experience that many viewers cherish. The ability to flip through channels, even for casual browsing, is a lost feature when switching to Apple TV. Instead, users must navigate between various apps to find content, which is not quite as effortless as channel surfing.

The first video, "Buying a 3rd gen Apple TV in 2024: Don't do it!" discusses the pitfalls of opting for older technology in today's streaming landscape.
In the UK, the television experience remains fragmented. The traditional BBC, alongside private networks like ITV, Channel 4, and Sky, creates a complex environment for streaming. Sky has historically excelled at uniting these diverse services, but its lack of full integration with Apple TV limits its functionality for users wishing to transition completely.
The Sky Go app, introduced last year, provides access to Sky's live and on-demand content, but it’s primarily a supplement to the standard Sky box, which undermines its value on the Apple TV platform. The intricacies of industry politics and regulations contribute to these limitations, leaving UK consumers at a disadvantage.
Section 2.1: The Frustration with Now TV
For those who wish to access Sky's programming without the full subscription, Now TV presents an option. However, my experience with the app on Apple TV has been disappointing, characterized by poor performance and low image quality. Despite its flaws, it remains the only way to catch specific programming, such as Formula 1.
Section 2.2: Enhancing the Experience with HomePods
The addition of HomePods to my Apple TV setup has significantly enhanced our music streaming experience. The combination of the Apple TV 4K with the newly revived HomePod and a HomePod mini creates a multi-room audio system that rivals traditional setups like Sonos. Although Siri occasionally struggles with specific commands, the overall integration with Apple devices has been enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
Throughout this year, the Apple TV 4K has integrated seamlessly into our living room, providing a reliable source of entertainment. While the transition from traditional TV to streaming has had its challenges, the benefits have far outweighed the drawbacks. Despite minor hiccups, such as occasional connectivity issues, the Apple TV 4K has firmly established itself as our main entertainment hub.
The only lingering concern is the fragmented nature of the television landscape in the UK. A more cohesive integration of services would enhance the user experience significantly. Nevertheless, I’m happy to confirm that the Apple TV 4K is here to stay in our home, a statement I never expected to make.
