Chapter 1: Embracing the Journey of 25
Reaching the age of twenty-five often signifies a pivotal moment in life. It’s a time when our brains are fully developed, and many individuals experience a quarter-life crisis. At this age, there’s a wealth of knowledge to be gathered from those who have walked the path before us. Reflecting on my experiences as a Filipina immigrant, filled with love, challenges, triumphs, and moments of healing, I realize that the most profound lessons come from personal experiences.
If I had the chance to revisit my younger self, I would craft a heartfelt list of insights, akin to a loving letter.
Dear 25-Year-Old Ronni,
Congratulations! We’ve managed to overcome our self-destructive patterns. While life threw us some curveballs, we’ve emerged stronger. Although it may feel like something is missing right now, there is so much joy ahead! I look forward to you relishing every moment that comes your way.
In the meantime, here are some essential reminders:
- Be mindful of your mental and physical health, as you’ll inhabit your body for a lifetime; neglect can lead to regrets down the line.
- Your parents have done their utmost; show them love and appreciation always.
- Value your friendships and nurture the connections you cherish.
- Remember that all things are transient.
- Your aspirations will shift numerous times before you find clarity, and that’s perfectly normal.
- That vow of never marrying? Just wait and see!
- The person you thought you couldn’t live without? They’ve moved on, and you’re thriving.
- Understand that trauma is a natural part of life; it requires compassion, patience, and healing.
- Invest in your skincare—use serums and sunscreen with SPF 35 or higher.
- You’ll come to appreciate your life more through the difficult times.
- Trust your instincts when someone feels “off”; they are rarely wrong.
- Chasing money is a hollow pursuit; seek inspiration instead.
- Show up and give your best effort every day.
- You are enough as you are.
- Embrace and love your authentic self; there’s no one else like you.
- Your freedom hinges on the discipline fueled by motivation.
- Don’t tolerate negativity in your life.
- Listen to your body: eat when hungry, rest when tired, and find your escape through meditation, running, or writing.
- Incorporate more salads, greens, beans, and fruits into your diet.
- Appreciate the gift of stamina and don’t take it for granted.
- Be cautious about whom you trust.
- Recognize that you deserve the space you occupy.
- Tune out distractions and focus on your dreams and desires.
- You are worthy of your wildest aspirations.
- Healing is forthcoming, but only if you embrace vulnerability and patience.
Twenty-five seems like a distant memory. The young woman in that photograph seemed so sure of everything, believing she had life figured out. I’m grateful she was mistaken because life unfolded in the most beautiful and unpredictable manner.
With love,
Dearest You,
To everyone—young, old, and in-between—if you ever feel lost, remember that transformation is happening within you until your surroundings align with your true essence. Don’t overlook the in-between moments; they are where inspiration ignites and purpose emerges.
And in moments of solitude, remember that you are never truly alone.
Yours in love and writing,
