During this period, three countries sent spacecraft to Mars: the United Arab Emirates with its Hope orbiter on July 20, China with Tianwen-1 on July 23, and the United States, which launched Perseverance on July 30.

The cruise phase begins once the spacecraft separates from its launch vehicle shortly after takeoff. Leaving Earth at a speed of about 24,600 mph (39,600 kph), the journey to Mars spans approximately seven months and covers around 300 million miles (480 million kilometers). Engineers have multiple opportunities to adjust the spacecraft's trajectory to ensure a successful landing in Jezero Crater. The first course correction occurs about 15 days post-launch.

Perseverance is a large, six-wheeled rover equipped with advanced scientific tools. Its destination, Jezero Crater, was once the site of an ancient river delta, making it a prime location for detecting signs of ancient life. Once on the Martian surface, the rover will analyze the atmosphere and climate, test technologies for potential human habitation, and collect samples from various rocks to be returned to Earth in the future. A key objective is to determine whether Mars was, or currently is, inhabited, marking it as a true life-detection mission.
