Understanding the Bond: An In-Depth Look at Wolf Brother
Written on
Chapter 1: A New Perspective
As time passes, Torak and the cub begin to develop their own names for one another. The chapter opens with the cub's viewpoint, where he refers to Torak as Tall Tailless. When the narrative shifts to Torak's perspective, we discover he has conducted a naming rite for the cub, who he simply names Wolf. This provides an interesting contrast between their two perspectives. Torak finds that communicating with Wolf comes easily to him, feeling as though this understanding is innate rather than learned. However, he still grapples with the source of this knowledge.
Wolf, on the other hand, is equally perplexed by his own instincts. He seems to have tapped into an inherent guidance system that leads him to help Torak navigate their surroundings, even without fully understanding how he knows the paths they should take. This intuitive sense leads them to their first major hunt, successfully tracking and killing a buck, a critical moment that sets them on a path toward the Mountain. Torak's trust in Wolf grows, as he follows the cub's lead, even when he is unsure of the direction.
In fact, Torak's feelings of isolation have deepened, prompting him to distance himself further from humans. This decision aligns with his father's advice, but the overwhelming helplessness he once felt has dissipated. Now, with Wolf by his side, he feels less reliant on the company of others.
The first video, Wolf Brother Part 7 (Chapter 6), delves into the evolving dynamics between Torak and Wolf, showcasing their unique bond as they navigate their challenges together.
Chapter 2: Mastering the Hunt
Despite feeling somewhat inexperienced in hunting, Torak demonstrates significant skill. He and Wolf spend an entire day tracking the buck, with Torak cleverly masking his scent using wood ash to avoid detection. His tracking abilities hint at his father's teachings, as he recalls the wisdom of understanding prey:
"All day, Torak had followed its trail of bitten-off twigs and cloven prints, trying to feel what it was feeling, guessing where it would go next. To track prey, you must first learn to know it as you would a brother. What it eats, and when and how; where it rests; how it moves." (pg.48)
After successfully taking down the buck, Torak offers a silent thanks to the animal, honoring the ancient pact between hunters and the World Spirit. He meticulously prepares the kill, reflecting on the scarcity of prey since his last encounter with the bear, which has seemingly driven other animals away.
In the second video, Wolf Brother Part 6 (Chapter 5), we explore the consequences of Torak's actions and the challenges he faces, shedding light on his evolving understanding of nature.
Chapter 3: Communication and Confusion
Torak's thoughts often drift to his mysterious powers and the cryptic comments made by Fa. While he can usually decipher Wolf's intentions, the cub's ability to grasp Torak's thoughts remains elusive. Similarly, Wolf finds Torak's behavior puzzling. The young cub has his own names for various things—like calling fire the Bright-Beast-That-Bites-Hot—and is bewildered by Torak's long sleep durations, often nudging him to wake up more frequently.
The interactions between Torak and Wolf are quite entertaining, as the cub attempts to teach Torak to wake up more often, only to be met with frustration from the boy:
"The cub tried to teach Tall Tailless to wake up more often, by nudging him and biting his ears. Instead of being grateful, Tall Tailless just got very, very cross… Well, what did he expect, if he wouldn't let his pack-brother wake him up?" (pg.46)
Even with Torak's numerous quirks—his rough vocalizations, weaker senses, and bipedal movement—Wolf remains steadfastly loyal, following him as if he is the pack leader. However, one can't help but wonder if Wolf's naivety stems from his youth, as he desperately seeks the companionship of a pack.
Chapter 4: The Whistle and the Unknown
Later, Torak crafts a whistle from a grouse bone, though it produces no sound. Initially, he thinks he has made a mistake, but he soon discovers that it elicits a lively response from Wolf. This realization hints at a useful tool for calling the cub without causing a ruckus.
Unfortunately, Torak's time to savor this victory is short-lived, as he is suddenly captured by an unknown figure. All that is revealed is a large hand that seizes him by the jerkin, suggesting he may have wandered into forbidden territory.
