Reclaiming Strength: A Journey to My First Pull-Up

Written on

Chapter 1: A Moment of Reflection

As I stand before the metal bar, I feel a wave of dizziness wash over me, its height seeming almost insurmountable.

All around me, families engage in carefree fun. A father, struggling in flip-flops, desperately tries to keep up with his giggling daughter on the merry-go-round. Nearby, a mother gently pushes her young child on a swing, the toddler's black hair dancing in the wind as he tilts his head back in delight.

My heart aches with nostalgia, recalling the exhilarating desire to reach higher and higher on the swing, convinced that I could touch the moon or even launch myself into space. Yet, now, my body feels heavy, firmly grounded to the earth.

The doctors had warned me about potential feelings of depression following childbirth, a natural consequence of the sudden drop in pregnancy hormones. However, they hadn’t prepared me for the piercing joy of children's laughter that would resonate so painfully against my skin.

Determined, I refocus on the bar. With only two months left until the wildland firefighting season begins, I'm eager to join the elite hotshot crew this summer as one of the few female firefighters. Many aspects of my life seem overwhelming at the moment: my turbulent relationship with my ex-boyfriend, the challenge of maintaining my studies at a demanding liberal arts college where I've just received a full scholarship, and my physical health. Yet, the requirements to qualify as a hotshot feel tangible, with one crucial task being to complete nine pull-ups.

I glance up at the bar again, feeling incredulous about the distance between it and my body. How will I ever manage to lift myself up?

Suddenly, the blonde girl from the merry-go-round appears beside me, her skin and hair shimmering in the sunlight—she's almost too radiant to look at directly.

"I can do a flip on this bar, wanna see?" she exclaims, effortlessly climbing onto a lower bar nearby. With a quick maneuver, she swings her leg over and performs a full spin.

"See?" she challenges, shaking her golden curls from her eyes to look at me, "Can you do that?"

My legs feel heavy and clumsy; I know I’ll never move with the same grace she possesses. I can sense her presence, like a flickering flame at the edge of a thick forest.

"I just want to pull myself up," I confess, my voice raspy from months of contemplation. It feels as if I've forgotten how to express my thoughts aloud. As I share this truth with the vibrant girl, I feel exposed and awkwardly adult.

I find myself in a liminal space, neither a mother nor a child, but an outsider in this family-friendly park.

"Well, then do it," she retorts, flipping around the bar once more to emphasize her encouragement.

With determination, I look up, raising my hands. My freckled palms grip the bar, committing me to this challenge. A wave of heat washes over me, followed by a chill.

What am I doing here?

I manage to pull myself halfway up, but soon find myself hanging, unable to lift my weary body further. I kick my legs inelegantly, feeling like a whale stranded on the shore. Memories flood back—times spent executing pull-ups in elementary school and in the gym with my male cousins.

A surge of borrowed energy courses through me, a reckless spirit from days gone by.

And then, I am up.

My chin rests on the bar as I gasp for breath, my gaze drifting to a maple tree laden with fresh leaves. I can almost hear the young girl clapping for my success.
