# The Nuanced Relationship Between Generative AI and Creativity

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Generative AI's Impact

Recently, I sought feedback from my readers through a Spring Survey, which addressed several topics to see how my interests align with yours. One particular area stood out: the role of generative AI in creative fields such as writing, visual arts, and video production.

Surprisingly, the responses were divided: 25% of participants expressed skepticism about AI's place in creativity, 22% supported its integration, while a significant 53% felt the issue was more nuanced. This prompted me to consider a couple of key observations: Firstly, I should have included a follow-up question for those who identified their stance as "complicated." Secondly, aside from this group, opinions were almost evenly split between the proponents and opponents of generative AI.

It seems we can all agree that generative AI is here to stay. While its future applications remain uncertain, these tools have gained mainstream traction and will likely be part of our lives moving forward. Personally, I have found a way to coexist with AI: I see it as beneficial for personal tasks like error detection, suggestions, issue resolution, and translation. However, I draw the line at using AI for creative endeavors or for anything that I would present as my own work.

Perhaps the 53% who feel it's complicated are wrestling with where to draw their lines with AI. I understand this sentiment; as this technology evolves, we all need to figure out how it fits into our daily routines.

However, the more I delve into the discussions around AI, the clearer the situation becomes. There are alarming instances where generative AI has been misused, leading to scams and other harmful outcomes. Here are a few troubling examples I've come across recently:

  • An "art project" developed a camera that uses generative AI to strip the clothing off individuals in photos. This raises serious ethical questions about memory preservation. (404 Media)
  • The Washington State Lottery had to retract a website feature after it generated nude images of a woman in a hotel room. (Ars Technica)
  • Generative AI has also been employed to create deepfake influencers by superimposing faces onto real women's Instagram videos to generate revenue. (404 Media)
  • There’s an alarming increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse material online, complicating efforts by researchers and law enforcement. (WSJ)
  • Microsoft researchers have demonstrated the ability to create realistic deepfake videos with fully synchronized audio using only a single photo, even employing the Mona Lisa as a test case. (Ars Technica)

Amidst these troubling narratives surrounding generative AI, I did find one positive application: researchers have trained an AI to identify metastatic cancer cells before they spread, which is a significant breakthrough in medical technology.

While it's clear that generative AI will be part of our future, I wish more resources were directed toward projects that can positively affect humanity. The cancer research is promising and could lead to impactful outcomes. Sadly, a disproportionate amount of effort seems to be focused on generating nonconsensual deepfake pornography.

For me, the narrative surrounding generative AI is not complicated; it poses potential dangers. I prefer my AI to be unexciting—focused on scientific endeavors, supportive roles, and addressing real-world problems.

I'd love to hear your thoughts if you align with the "it's complicated" perspective.
