Navigating Caffeine and Creativity: Finding Balance

Written on

Chapter 1: The Caffeine Chronicles

I recently found myself consumed by caffeine. My day began with a matcha latte, followed by a tumbler of freshly brewed coffee at my coworking space, and then two more tumblers of Earl Grey tea. To top it off, I indulged in a Coca-Cola when I got home. My productivity peaked, evident from the 46 tabs open in my browser. I secured a domain name, watched a YouTube tutorial on promoting content on Pinterest, and devoured three articles on Medium about individuals earning substantial income through blogging. Am I losing my grip? Absolutely. I was right in the middle of signing up for a Pinterest business account when I switched to my 22nd tab to jot down these thoughts in Google Docs. The creative spark from caffeine is undeniable.

Having left my graphic design position a month ago, I transitioned from the stress of creating PowerPoint presentations for indecisive clients to the hustle of making rent. I prefer this new challenge, and I have no regrets—at least not yet. This isn’t my first time stepping away from a job to discover what truly motivates me. In our social media-driven world, everything online appears more appealing than my current endeavors. Each clickbait title tempts me with the promise of making a living from writing, but the thought of how long that journey may take, alongside watching my savings dwindle, leaves me feeling overwhelmed.

Just like many others in 2020, I sought therapy. Living in a 1,200 square foot home with my partner, whom I adore, became challenging—especially with his penchant for speakerphone calls. During my third session, while lamenting how deadlines make me emotional, my therapist suggested I might be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Naturally, being a label-loving millennial, I was eager to learn more. HSPs are individuals who experience emotions more intensely, comprising about 15-20% of the population. I often cry from sadness, anger, or embarrassment, making me relate deeply to this concept. Following my therapist's advice, I began reading The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D. The book shares stories of other HSPs, including one man who left his job because it clashed with his sensitive nature. He managed to find a position that suited him better. I can only imagine the difficulties he faced in making that transition, such as the stress of job hunting. However, hearing about his journey inspired me to consider a similar path.

Now, I find myself at my computer, trying to determine what job aligns with my sensitivities. I've been reflecting on the phrase, "Done is better than perfect." As we scroll through images of glamorous Instagram models or watch ordinary individuals amass wealth through online courses, it's easy to feel pressured to achieve perfection before sharing our aspirations. The reason behind my 46 open tabs is my commitment to this mindset. Sure, my grammar could improve, and I could have devised a strategic plan before launching a venture, or maybe I should cut back on caffeinated drinks. The more I hesitate to create the life I desire, the longer it will take to uncover what doesn't work, prolonging my journey toward creating something remarkable. This is your cue to start. It’s perfectly fine not to have everything figured out—none of us do. Take that leap, adapt, and thrive. After all, done is better than perfect.
