In the realm of AI art, text-to-image prompts are often perceived as overly mechanical. This detachment leads some critics to dismiss AI-generated works as genuine art—a perspective I don't share. It often feels like AI art is simply crafted from a jumbled collection of descriptors, such as:
hyper-realistic, cinematic, detailed, hypermaximalist, octane render, unreal engine 5, 8K
While it's possible to formulate prompts in this manner, I will explain in a future post how to deconstruct such generic phrases effectively.
However, the true potential lies beyond mere strings of words. Utilizing the capabilities of natural language processing (NLP) is crucial for crafting more engaging and imaginative art.
With Machine Learning, NLP as Our Artistic Tool
In my recent writings, I explored how the selection of words can introduce vivid colors into our creations:
AI excels at capturing mood and tone, a nuance often overlooked in prompts. It attunes itself to the subtleties of language; terms like “shady,” “shadowy,” and “sepulchral” yield distinct artistic interpretations.
Jasper Art, akin to Dall-E 2, produces different—and arguably superior—results because it emphasizes NLP. This allows it to process complex sentences with semantic depth.
Originally a copywriting tool, Jasper AI now creates art, meaning its prompts can reflect tone and voice. The choices we make in language—beyond individual words to syntax and structure—add depth to our input.
Advancing AI Image Generation with NLP
OpenClip is set to revolutionize prompting methods. The days of using names like “Greg Rutkowski” are fading due to copyright and ethical considerations. We must innovate in how we articulate the art we reference, requiring a deeper understanding of artistic concepts.
I have been exploring the use of “narrative prompts.” Instead of casually linking terms, we should think carefully about our descriptions, crafting a more expressive narrative.
By painting with words, much like authors and poets, we can elicit a “mental image” from the AI, mirroring human creativity.
How to Create Narrative Prompts for AI Art Generators
For many prompt engineers, being expressive may not come easily, especially for those who aren't naturally creative writers. This is where AI can lend a hand. Previously, I developed a Jasper recipe that generates images from extensive text, like blog posts, to visually represent that content:
Building on this, what if I designed a command to transform a basic prompt laden with keywords into a narrative masterpiece? This more creative approach enhances the imagery. Here’s the procedure:
Using AI Text to Enrich Your AI Image Prompt
This command, applicable in Jasper AI Boss Mode, directs the AI as follows:
> rewrite the above prompt in entirely new evocative words
Let’s test this out. Here’s a solid prompt suggested by my colleague, Kris Kashtanova, who made history with the first copyright for an AI comic book:
> tiny lion cub, 8k, kawaii, adorable eyes, pixar style, winter snowflakes, wind, dramatic lighting, pose, full body, adventure, fantasy, renderman, concept art, octane render, artgerm
After running it through my “Narrativize Your Prompt” Jasper recipe, I received this:
> A small but valiant lion cub with eyes that seem to penetrate your very soul. In a snowy landscape, he stands boldly, with the wind tousling his fur. He resembles a creature from legend, poised for adventure. The lighting is striking and dramatic, leading to an astonishingly beautiful render.
The result is far more detailed and vivid. Let’s observe how the art generator interprets this input:
In comparison, here’s the outcome of the original prompt:
The contrast is evident. While many elements were similar in both prompts, the more lyrical and evocative description resulted in a significantly richer image. Notably, we didn’t resort to clichéd phrases like “photorealistic” or “highly detailed” to achieve these lifelike results.
I believe the extra effort is worthwhile.
