Embracing Change: An Author's Acknowledgement of Growth

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey of Letting Go

I feel prepared to embrace a new chapter in my life. It's time to close the book that has been worn from my touch, to finally file away this story that I've kept open for far too long. You will always hold a special place in my heart, like a cherished episode that one revisits when the world seems to pause. It’s a moment when even the clouds appear weary, letting their burdens spill onto the earth.

In many ways, you represent my first encounter with the unknown, reminiscent of my initial experiences with swimming—how I once felt overwhelmed yet exhilarated by the newness of it all. The waters that were once foreign eventually became my sanctuary. You were my refuge.

You will always be my first emotional wound, one that lingers and takes time to heal. I will often revisit those memories, reflecting on a time before we found ourselves where we are now. While there’s no sorrow in our narrative, I can still feel its ache. Thank you for this voyage, but I believe I am finally ready to move forward.

Chapter 1.1: The Inspiration Behind My Words

I penned this piece some time ago, part of a poetry collection I created during a writeathon at the start of the year. Although I didn't win, the experience allowed me to delve deep into my thoughts and select meaningful stories to transform into poetry.

Initially, I grappled with the title—“The Last Chapter” versus “An Author’s Acknowledgement.” Ultimately, I chose the latter, as we are the authors of our own narratives. Every decision we make has consequences, shaping our journeys in ways both rewarding and challenging.

I find myself often reflecting on the past, an inclination I’m hesitant to acknowledge. While I can't re-read the same book repeatedly, I frequently revisit chapters of my life shared with various people. Reflection can be beneficial, yet it can also become burdensome if I linger too long on what has already transpired.

Section 1.1.1: Learning to Forgive Myself

Reflecting on personal growth and forgiveness

I need to practice self-forgiveness. I must let go of past mistakes and embrace the idea that “everyone makes mistakes.” Unlike in movies, there’s no option to rewind and amend our pasts. Even fictional characters often learn that everything unfolds for a reason.

This poem reflects the struggle of clinging to a chapter that should have been closed long ago. From my perspective, the other person has moved on, crafting new chapters with others, while I remain trapped in self-inflicted pain.

The present moment is a precious gift, and I don’t want to look back in the future with regret over refusing to embrace it. There’s nothing wrong with reflecting; however, it becomes detrimental when it traps you. I’ve discovered that my happiness flourishes when I open myself to new experiences and connections with different individuals.
