The Distinction Between Intelligence and Wisdom

Intelligence enables the creation of AI, while wisdom prompts us to consider the reasons behind its use. Intelligence develops technology and systems, while wisdom asks whether our pursuits align with our values and goals. While society celebrates intelligence, it often neglects the importance of wisdom.

Wisdom is cultivated through contemplation and reflection. It requires time to consider the purpose behind our intelligence. In examining the figures who shape our contemporary world, I observe many innovators celebrated for their intelligence, yet true wisdom seems scarce.

Among the wise voices in technology is Jaron Lanier, a prominent figure in Silicon Valley. His insights, often met with skepticism, challenge the rapid pace of technological advancement. Despite his love for technology, he advocates for mindful usage, even writing a book on the importance of stepping back from social media.

My thoughts also wander to a Wired article discussing how the Amish approach technology. Often perceived as anti-tech, they integrate wisdom into their technological choices by taking the time to reflect on its implications. This contrasts sharply with our rushed adoption of new technologies. I believe it's crucial to consider how new technologies might benefit or harm us, even if my conclusions differ from theirs.

As I analyze the discourse surrounding AI, I notice common fears emerging among both experts and laypeople. Will AI dominate humanity? Will it create autonomous armies? Will it render us obsolete? I argue that these fears are valid, as AI operates much like modern society—too fast to pause and reflect, too quick to act without wisdom.

We persist in pursuing profit-driven wars, mindless consumption, and the uncritical adoption of new technologies. Our intelligence is evident, but wisdom is lacking. How then can we expect the AI we create to be any different? If it leads us to obsolescence or destruction, wouldn’t that be a reflection of our own choices?

What Might Artificial Wisdom Look Like?

Can Artificial Wisdom (AW) coexist with AI, fostering a digital environment that encourages reflection and ethical considerations before decision-making? Where would this wisdom originate?

AI continuously learns from its environment, absorbing our dialogues, habits, and knowledge. Yet, it also assimilates biases and prejudices. While there's hesitation to incorporate religious wisdom, could we explore philosophical insights? Not only those from historical Western thinkers but also indigenous wisdom and Eastern philosophies? How might these perspectives provide a moral compass for AI?

Returning to my interaction with ChatGPT, I noted its response: “Wisdom encompasses knowledge, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of context and ethical considerations.” This highlights that AI lacks genuine emotional or moral intuition, which is essential for true wisdom. In discussions at the UN, courts, or government, human interests and values guide our conversations. Intelligence may drive decisions, but wisdom tempers them.

AI possesses knowledge about various wisdom traditions and social issues, but without incorporating wisdom into its framework, it risks advancing society without humanity.

So, can we instill wisdom in AI, or must we cultivate our own wisdom in its application?

Fears and Aspirations for the Future

The anxieties surrounding AI and the regulatory measures being proposed by various nations are justified. We instinctively recognize that AI operates similarly to modern society: lacking sufficient checks and balances and missing opportunities for reflection. The emergence of tools like ChatGPT for writing and editing raises challenges for educators and employers.

I’ve encountered artists whose potential clients arrive with AI-generated artwork, asking for tattoos based on these creations. Some artists are now resorting to AI-generated art, risking the meticulous craft they have honed over years. I cherish visiting art galleries to appreciate the countless hours that artists devote to perfecting their craft.

Similarly, I value the process of acquiring knowledge and wisdom. I find joy in taking the time to reflect on my learning and its relevance to my life and the world. I am open to using AI tools like ChatGPT but remain committed to engaging in the thinking and learning process myself. I believe that to alleviate the justified fears surrounding AI, we must reconsider our relationship with it.

Either AI needs to evolve towards wisdom, or we must strive for greater wisdom ourselves. However, since AI is not human and never will be, my recommendation is that we focus on the latter: we must enhance our own wisdom.
