How to Cultivate Reading as a Daily Habit
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing the Reading Journey
When pondering a topic to discuss, the concept of reading immediately came to mind. Many individuals express a desire to read more, while others proudly showcase their extensive book collections. Despite our society's strong emphasis on reading as a valuable trait, it often seems that few actually engage with books.
It's common for people to buy books that end up gathering dust, acting merely as decorative items that suggest knowledge, or they might read just the first chapter before losing interest entirely. I can relate to this; I was an avid reader until I entered university, which disrupted my reading habits. Having graduated high school in 2010, just before smartphones became ubiquitous, I found myself drifting away from books. Recently, however, I've successfully rekindled my reading passion and have integrated it into my daily routine. I’m eager to share my experiences, strategies, and the philosophy that helped me rediscover the joy of reading.
Section 1.1: Finding the Right Book
The initial step to establishing a reading habit is simply selecting a book. This might seem obvious, yet many gravitate towards nonfiction or trending titles, often against their own preferences. It's perfectly acceptable to indulge in that lighthearted romance novel or an engaging fantasy series. Personally, I chose "The Witcher" series because of my fondness for the video games and the captivating world depicted in the novels. This choice not only reignited my excitement for reading but also opened the door to exploring nonfiction genres that piqued my interest.
Section 1.2: Crafting a Reading-Friendly Environment
In his book "Atomic Habits," James Clear emphasizes the importance of an environment that encourages habit formation. This principle applies to reading as well; a distraction-free space is vital for successful reading. Designate a specific area in your home dedicated to reading, eliminate distractions by setting your phone to "Do Not Disturb," and establish a consistent reading timeframe. While these suggestions may seem straightforward, they are crucial for habit development. Personally, I dedicate at least 10 minutes each night before bed to read, which is a manageable amount of time that allows me to unwind and transition into sleep.
Chapter 2: Transforming Idle Time into Reading Opportunities
Consider replacing mindless scrolling on your phone with reading a book or using a Kindle. I’ve observed many individuals adopting this habit, and I’ve found it to be quite effective myself. There are numerous moments during the day, especially while waiting for children after school activities, that can be utilized for reading instead of scrolling through social media. If carrying a physical book proves inconvenient, an e-reader can be a great alternative.

Section 2.1: Tracking Your Progress
Keeping track of your reading can significantly boost your accountability and engagement as a reader. In a previous post, I mentioned the importance of monitoring habits and goals. To regain my reading rhythm, I started using an app called "StoryGraph," which is an alternative to the well-known "GoodReads." I appreciate its features that analyze my reading pace, preferences, and offer personalized book suggestions. Engaging with this app has made reading more enjoyable and interactive, especially as I can connect with friends and join a community of fellow readers.
Reading has profoundly impacted my personal development, and recommitting to this habit has expanded my knowledge. I'm grateful that I set this goal for myself, and I hope this guide inspires you to embark on your own reading journey. If you found this content valuable, consider following me on Medium.
