Conversations: Are They Being Kidnapped by Labels?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Nature of Identity

In today's world, the discourse surrounding identity often feels hijacked by rigid definitions. As the creator of a general knowledge platform, I firmly believe that expertise should not be a prerequisite for engaging in discussions about any subject matter.

However, when those leading these conversations base them on dubious premises, we find ourselves in a precarious situation. Take my own identity as a case in point. According to many self-proclaimed intellectuals, I am categorized as a middle-aged, college-educated, Indian-American, non-Black person of color, fluent in both English and Spanish — yet I do not identify as Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx, and I prefer the he/him/his pronouns.

Let’s explore these labels further.

This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.

Section 1.1: Age and Appearance

Yes, I acknowledge that I am middle-aged, with gray hair and a teenager in the house.

Section 1.2: Education and Its Implications

While I completed my education in the American university system, I find it to be one of the most divisive elements in society. It not only perpetuates class distinctions but also prioritizes academic knowledge over practical skills, all while charging exorbitant fees for degrees.

Subsection 1.2.1: Cultural Background

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Indian parents, I navigate my cultural identity with some difficulty. I speak limited Marathi and my Hindi is even poorer. My culinary preferences include beef, which makes me feel somewhat out of place in gatherings dominated by Indian culture.

Section 1.3: The Color Spectrum

Skin color is primarily influenced by melanin, regulated by numerous genes. I find myself questioning where I fit into this spectrum, and frankly, it’s not something I dwell on.

Chapter 2: Language and Identity

Though I can converse fluently in English and Spanish, had my upbringing been different, I might have been proficient in an entirely different set of languages.

The first video titled "TEXT TO SPEECH: Our Friend Has Been Kidnapped And..." delves into the complex nature of identity and language, echoing the themes discussed here.

The second video, "HELP!!! I'VE BEEN KIDNAPPED!!! | iJustine," presents a humorous take on personal identity and societal labels, reinforcing our exploration of self-definition.

Section 2.1: Cultural Labels

The term "Hispanic" translates from the Spanish "hispano," which signifies individuals whose roots are in Spain. I do not fit this classification.

Similarly, the terms Latino/Latina/Latinx refer to individuals from Latin America, regions where Romance languages prevail. Although English is classified as a Germanic language, it contains numerous Latin-derived words. With the U.S. being the second-largest Spanish-speaking nation and Puerto Rico being a U.S. territory, the definitions surrounding these labels can be quite perplexing.

Section 2.2: Pronouns and Personal Preference

While I prefer the he/him/his pronouns, I encourage flexibility in how I am addressed. For the record, I enjoy films like "Sleepless in Seattle," "The Devil Wears Prada," and series like "Emily in Paris."

So, if it simplifies your understanding, feel free to label me as a middle-aged, college-educated, Indian-American, non-Black person of color, fluent in English and Spanish — though not Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx, and preferring he/him/his pronouns.

However, it’s crucial to remember that my true essence is that of a collection of cells. Fine, a middle-aged collection of cells.
