An Open Letter to Climate Deniers: A Plea for Rational Discourse

Written on

Chapter 1: A Call to Awareness

Dear People of the World,

Did you enjoy science as a child? For me, it was a joy until it shifted from catching tadpoles to deciphering graphs on standardized exams. Perhaps you thrived in sports or music? I wanted to sing, but my xylophone skills were limited, leading me to abandon that dream in favor of drawing and writing.

Regardless of your unique talents, it’s often the academics who pursued advanced degrees in fields that seem incomprehensible to many. Do you recall when these experts began urging us all to pay attention? They warned us of a climate emergency! It threatens frogs, bees, and polar bears alike! It could impact you, Mitch, Janet, and D’Ante Jesus Jimmy Bob Elvis Smith too! Your AR-47 won’t shield you from heatstroke, nor can you shoot down a hurricane.

For the love of humanity, can we put an end to dismissive attitudes and genuinely listen?

Many might fix their vehicles themselves initially, but when starter fluid and duct tape fail, would they not eventually seek out a mechanic? Similarly, if cooking a leg of lamb proves challenging, wouldn’t picking up a pizza be a more palatable solution?

If you struggle with your car or receive complaints about your culinary skills, consulting an expert is the logical route. I apologize if this comes across as sarcastic; I recognize the need for sincerity. Thus, I pose this question: if you lack expertise in a particular area, why not allow those with more knowledge or experience to guide you?

This piece advocates a bold notion: let’s consider the insights of climate scientists. They’ve consistently been accurate, albeit filled with anxiety and frustration at times. Some have resorted to writing open letters.

Section 1.1: The Dunning-Kruger Effect

It’s been noted that individuals lacking intelligence often misjudge their own capabilities. Those who struggle academically tend to overestimate their understanding. To quote a former president, “People are always misunderestimating me.” Ironically, he wasn’t entirely incorrect, and he certainly wasn't the least intelligent president.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Limitations of Perspective

A humorous take on intelligence and expertise

We humans are akin to a fly on an elephant, perceiving only a fraction of the reality before us. We may not grasp that the elephant possesses four legs, a trunk, and a gentle temperament; to us, it appears as a flat expanse. However, some among us utilize mathematics and science to understand the larger picture.

As we face an increasingly inhospitable planet, it’s vital to remember that these warnings were made decades ago. While not every detail was precise, the general trends have been evident. In 2006, An Inconvenient Truth vividly illustrated the impending climate disaster, yet many responded with disbelief and derision.

Section 1.2: The Need for Action

In military parlance, the advice is simple: lead, follow, or step aside. I won’t urge climate deniers to follow, as I fear they may complicate matters further. Instead, I implore you to step aside. Unfortunately, many of you may soon face dire consequences from a planet that cannot endure further negligence.

The GOP Still Denies Global Warming

The individuals in power, often backed by the oil industry, continue to reject the climate crisis narrative. As reported by the Center for American Progress, as of March 2021, there are still 139 elected officials in Congress who refuse to accept the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change.

It’s a significant issue. It’s not a mere inconvenience. If you acknowledge the reality of climate change, it’s imperative to vote out those who deny it. Set aside your hesitations about candidates and ensure we do not elect climate deniers.

Final Thoughts from a Concerned Citizen

I excelled academically in my early years, but later became disillusioned, realizing that my voice mattered little without the right image or financial backing. If you suspect you might be a hidden scientific genius, I urge you to support candidates who recognize the urgency of climate change.

Chapter 2: A Call for Change

This video features Bill Nye addressing climate change deniers, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging scientific evidence to combat this pressing issue.

In this video, we see a transformation of a climate denier into an advocate, showcasing the potential for change and understanding in the face of overwhelming evidence.
