Celebrating Fathers: Insights and Reflections for June 2022

Written on

Chapter 1: Honoring Fathers and Their Legacy

As we approach Father's Day weekend, a heartfelt acknowledgment goes out to all the dads and future dads out there. May your loved ones shower you with appreciation this year. For those mourning the loss of fathers or grandfathers, I encourage you to take a moment to reminisce about the cherished memories you hold with these remarkable individuals and perhaps share some of their wisdom with the younger generation around you.

Let’s dive into some thoughts that occupied my mind this past week.

Section 1.1: Neanderthal Genes and Their Impact on COVID

Recently, I came across an intriguing fact: individuals who carry a specific Neanderthal gene may have experienced more severe effects from COVID-19. It’s astonishing to consider that a gene inherited from an extinct species of humans over 60,000 years ago could still significantly influence our lives today.

This might also shed light on why Africa was less severely impacted by COVID than anticipated in the early stages. Contrary to earlier beliefs that Africans lacked Neanderthal DNA, it's now understood that a portion of it exists among Africans due to ancestral migrations and interbreeding with Neanderthals. However, the amount found in Africans is significantly lower than in Europeans and Asians. While the difference may seem small, it could have considerable implications for health and vulnerability to various diseases.

Section 1.2: The New 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline

While the hotline itself isn't new, the introduction of the easy-to-remember number 988 is. I find it puzzling that it took so long to establish such a straightforward option, but I’m relieved it will be available nationwide next month. This change allows individuals in distress to connect with help simply by dialing three numbers, rather than searching for the lengthy 800-273-8255.

Given the anticipated increase in calls due to the number's simplicity, mental health professionals are prioritizing the recruitment and training of more operators. Let’s hope they can find suitable candidates in time for the nationwide rollout on July 16th.

Section 1.3: Must-Read Articles from Medium

I’ve been enjoying a plethora of insightful articles on Medium lately, and a couple truly stood out this week. First, I recommend Andrew P. Brown III, PhD’s article titled The Business of Racism. He articulates how politics and media work together to manipulate public perception, shedding light on a widespread con.

Next, Isaiah McCall reveals the complexities behind Shell's operations in Africa, exposing a massive deception that the global community largely overlooks.

For additional reading, I suggest Systemic Plunder by Ibrahim John and Might Our Charity Be Hurting Africa More Than it Helps by myself. It’s crucial to challenge the misconceptions about Africa and amplify the real narrative.

Chapter 2: Cultural Reflections and Artistic Discoveries

Section 2.1: Searching for the Film Cracka

Thanks to Jenny Lane, I discovered an intriguing film that aligns with a novel I attempted to write, exploring a world where racial roles are reversed. While searching for this film, I encountered difficulties, but with the help of the director, Dale Resteghini, I learned it’s available on a Black-owned platform called Vyre.

This film, under 30 minutes, was initially meant to be a TV series but faced backlash, leading to its current format. It raises important questions about representation in media and the narratives we tend to avoid.

The second video, Rahdo Rounds Up June 2022 - 20 Games in 55 minutes!, offers an engaging summary of various games, perfect for any gaming enthusiast.

Section 2.2: A Poem to Remember

I recently shared a poem that holds a special place in my heart: Nothing Lasts Forever by Rabindranath Tagore, beautifully read by Lisa Bonet. It’s a poignant reminder of the transient nature of life and is worth revisiting.

Section 2.3: Celebrating Fatherhood

A father's love is a treasure to be celebrated. I invite you to share your favorite sayings from dads in the comments below.

That wraps up my reflections for the week! How was your week? Did you come across anything new or exciting? Any special plans for Father's Day weekend?

Thank you for reading, and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
