Exploring GPT-4: A Comprehensive Review of Its Capabilities

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to GPT-4

In recent days, I have taken a deep dive into ChatGPT/GPT-4, the latest AI language model generating considerable attention in the tech community. As a software developer and DevOps engineer, I had the chance to utilize GPT-4 for both work and personal projects, and I must admit I was quite taken by its capabilities.

User interface of GPT-4 in action

Nevertheless, like any emerging technology, I also encountered some reservations regarding its functionality and usability. So, let’s delve into my candid review and determine if GPT-4 truly lives up to the excitement surrounding it.

Section 1.1: Limitations of GPT-4

While my experience with GPT-4 was largely positive, certain drawbacks were apparent. Firstly, the model remains in limited release, accessible solely to ChatGPT Plus subscribers who opt for a paid membership. Thankfully, I possess a ChatGPT Plus subscription, enabling me to explore its features early on.

A notable downside is the restriction on request limits. As a ChatGPT Plus user, I found myself constrained by a specific number of requests within a designated timeframe, which OpenAI continuously adjusted. Initially, users were allowed 100 requests every four hours, but this was subsequently reduced to 50, and then to a mere 25 requests every three hours. While I acknowledge that GPT-4 demands substantial computational power, the high level of interest in this model begs the question: why didn’t OpenAI allocate adequate resources from the outset? Microsoft’s infrastructure certainly has the capability.

As someone who employs GPT-4 for both professional and personal tasks, I found the limitation of 25 requests every three hours insufficient. It’s frustrating that the platform does not indicate how many requests remain in the current time window or when the window resets.

Subsection 1.1.1: Token Limit Improvements

As a seasoned Application Developer and DevOps Engineer, I have relied on ChatGPT for generating code documentation and debugging. The previous GPT-3.5 model had a token limit of 4096 per request, roughly translating to about 3000 words. In contrast, the new GPT-4 model boasts an impressive limit of 32,000 tokens, accommodating nearly 25,000 words.

Comparison of token limits between GPT models

This enhanced token capacity is indeed a game changer for power users like myself, streamlining our usage of ChatGPT. However, I have observed that the web interface has yet to be updated to handle this expanded amount of text. The input limitations remain aligned with older models, which is somewhat disappointing.

Consequently, I am unable to input my entire code snippets into the ChatGPT interface, hindering the generation of comprehensive documentation for my code. I sincerely hope the ChatGPT team will consider revising their web interface to fully leverage the capabilities of GPT-4.

Section 1.2: Improved Output Quality

On a positive note, I must highlight that the text output from GPT-4 is significantly impressive. Compared to the previous model, GPT-3.5, the responses generated by GPT-4 are more coherent, structured, and natural. Notably, GPT-4 effectively considers the entire context of the conversation, yielding more accurate and personalized responses.

In a previous article where I explored writing a novel using GPT-4, I found its advanced ability to remember and utilize conversational history to be extremely powerful. This feature enriches the reader's experience and significantly enhances productivity for writers.

The first video provides an honest review of GPT-4, examining its strengths and weaknesses. It’s a must-watch for anyone considering this advanced AI tool.

Chapter 2: Advancements in Code Comprehension

Moreover, GPT-4 showcases remarkable improvements in understanding code context. I have noted a substantial enhancement in its logic comprehension capabilities, which could transform our approach to coding and debugging.

As an experienced developer, I recognize the vital role of having a tool that can accurately grasp the intricacies of complex code. With GPT-4, the quality of code context has improved significantly, paving the way for more intuitive and effective coding solutions.

The second video poses the question, "Is ChatGPT-4 Worth It?" and explores various use cases and user experiences, providing valuable insights into the model's practicality.

As I continued my exploration of GPT-4, I began to ponder which access method would best suit my needs: should I remain with ChatGPT Plus or transition to the GPT API once it fully supports the updated model? After careful consideration, I believe that utilizing the GPT API will offer a more nuanced approach than the current web interface.

The API provides immense flexibility, enabling developers to seamlessly integrate GPT-4 capabilities into their projects. Additionally, with the upcoming Foundry service from OpenAI, I can utilize a dedicated server running GPT-4, thereby eliminating any availability issues and enhancing my workflow.

While ChatGPT Plus offers ease of access and a straightforward interface, the GPT API meets my requirements as a developer, granting me the power and flexibility essential for my projects. Consequently, I have decided to cancel my ChatGPT Plus subscription in favor of the GPT API and its forthcoming Foundry service.

In summary, I am genuinely excited about the potential of GPT-4 to enhance various aspects of our lives, from professional endeavors to personal creativity. Although there are areas that require improvement, I am confident that OpenAI will continue to work diligently to make GPT-4 an exceptional and user-friendly tool for all.
