Understanding the Challenge of New Year’s Resolutions
Setting New Year’s resolutions can be exciting, yet many of us struggle to follow through.

Why Do We Often Fail at Our Resolutions?
Last year, I decided to take a deep dive into my own life and examine why I wasn’t achieving my goals. As a professional life coach, I teach others how to reach their objectives, yet I found myself falling short. Was I being hypocritical?
To find answers, I engaged in self-reflection and even sought the help of my own life coach. I realized that I had been tackling my resolutions ineffectively. Instead of creating a realistic plan, I had simply made a wishlist of aspirations without breaking them down into achievable steps. This lack of preparation led to my failure.
But why does this happen to so many of us? We often create ambitious lists without taking the necessary actions to make them a reality. The expectation that everything will simply fall into place is a common misconception that prevents us from pursuing our goals.
The Importance of Self-Worth
The critical factor here isn’t whether others believe we deserve success; it's about our own belief in ourselves. I realized I was wishing for change without taking actionable steps, primarily due to a lack of self-esteem and fear of feeling like a fraud.
Many people share this struggle, grappling with the question: Which comes first—success, self-esteem, or motivation? It’s a classic chicken-or-egg scenario.
The Role of Habits in Change
One must understand that to eliminate a bad habit, a new one must take its place.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
Imposter Syndrome is the feeling of being a fraud, even when you have the qualifications and skills. Despite my training and experience in life coaching, there were moments when I felt inadequate, leading to unmet business goals.
This realization came to light only after deep introspection. Understanding these feelings was the first step in overcoming them.
Breaking Through Self-Limiting Beliefs
Self-limiting beliefs can hinder your potential. These beliefs can sometimes be based on reality, but often they are just mental barriers.
To challenge your self-limiting beliefs, consider asking yourself:
- What if I successfully achieved ______?
- How would my life change if I ______?
- Am I equipped to ______?
- Can I learn how to _____?
- What will it cost me (in terms of time, energy, money, etc.)?
- Is this goal for myself or someone else?
- Why haven’t I started yet?
- How will I feel once I accomplish it?
- Is this moving me closer to my long-term goals?
Once you’ve reflected on these questions, it's time to create a list of actionable steps to achieve your objectives. Start small—identify the very first action you need to take.
For example, when I started my coaching practice, my initial task was simply to research. I spent time online looking into coaching platforms and website templates, without the pressure of having to act immediately.
This approach worked wonders for me. It was less overwhelming and only required a small time investment over several days. Gradually, I increased my efforts, and within three months, I had a functioning website and the momentum to continue moving forward.
Achieving goals isn't always easy, but it can be less daunting than it appears if you break it down into manageable steps.
Conclusion
We often overlook our struggles. Pay attention to your actions; they can reveal blind spots that may be holding you back.
