War: A Cycle of Suffering with No True Victors

Written on

Chapter 1: The Nature of Conflict

As I delve deeper into the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict, my conviction grows that humanity struggles to evolve positively. Throughout history, there have always been those who remain discontent.

Some individuals attempt to rationalize the abhorrent actions of Hamas this week, while many others express sympathy for the Israeli populace. With the tragic loss of over 1,300 innocent lives, it’s crucial to grasp a fundamental truth about war:

There are no winners. War has plagued humanity since its inception, and it’s unlikely to cease anytime soon.

Until we rid ourselves of greed and the insatiable thirst for power, territory, and wealth, true global harmony will remain elusive. Some will perpetually seek justification for inflicting pain, suffering, and death upon innocents. They will reference historical grievances—stolen lands, past conflicts, and wars—to validate their actions in the name of their chosen deity.

A genuine, benevolent god would not endorse the slaughter of its own creations. If a divine entity were observing this chaos, I believe it would be horrified. I know I am. A compassionate deity wouldn’t desire warfare in its name.

A somber view of conflict and its repercussions

I won’t recount the grisly details of the current tragedy unfolding in the Middle East. I am deeply concerned for countless individuals affected by this turmoil. Since childhood, I’ve awoken to news of military conflicts, terrorism, and war, and I’ve always sensed that our species might not endure indefinitely.

This thought grieves me. Our planet is vast, brimming with resources that could sustain harmonious living, yet we persist in our attempts to dominate, rob, and even kill one another. Perhaps we are merely another species among the estimated 2.13 million on Earth that finds it acceptable to obliterate perceived threats.

Human beings possess advanced cognitive capabilities, enabling logic and reasoning, yet many choose ignorance. A staggering number are swayed to join the ranks of those leading them to misery and destruction. The fear for their own survival significantly contributes to this mindset.

No one triumphs in warfare. Some may emerge from conflict with more fortune than others, but true victory remains elusive. Surviving a war might feel like fortune compared to the lives lost—innocent men, women, and children caught in the crossfire of devastation.

Now, consider this scenario: if Palestine were to conquer Israel and reclaim the lands fought over for millennia, what then? Would it lead to more persecution? Genocide? How much bloodshed is necessary to reconcile past grievances? You may celebrate a tactical victory, but warfare offers no genuine winners.

Chapter 2: The Future of Conflict

What about the future? Do you believe that overthrowing another nation's government will lead to peace? Initially, yes, but the focus would soon shift to vengeance for the lives lost and the lands usurped. This tragic dance of conflict has been repeated throughout history.

It's astonishing that many nations experience periods of relative tranquility at all.

Historically, few nations have escaped the grasp of war and violence. It appears as though we are inherently predisposed to greed, anger, and the willingness to harm others for our gain. How much do we truly need as a species? Like many, I would prefer a world where everyone has a roof over their heads and food on their table. The safety and happiness of children and families far outweighs the allure of wealth and grandiose mansions.

Yet, not everyone shares this perspective. There exist power-hungry individuals devoid of empathy, who would rather align with others of similar ilk to maintain control over the masses. Even those who possess ample resources often fall prey to greed, yearning for more than their fair share.

You can invoke fear and claim it’s about isolating oneself and loved ones from perceived threats. However, when you actively contribute to the war machine through violence against innocent civilians, your hypocrisy will likely haunt you for generations.

John Lennon’s song "Imagine" presents an idyllic vision, but I fear it will forever remain just that—an imagination.

I lack a solution to end warfare. The notion that we may never find resolution is disheartening. As I follow the news and witness the unfolding events in the Middle East, my heart aches for those losing family and friends to senseless violence.

Americans are fortunate to have not experienced war on our soil since the Civil War, where we fought against our own out of greed and hatred for differing beliefs. Most U.S. civilians will never know the horror of witnessing death and destruction in their own communities.

Yet, we face our own forms of conflict. Terrorist attacks and mass shootings plague our society. In a way, we are at war within ourselves, fighting battles that should not exist in a society that values life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Let us not judge foreign nations engaged in warfare when we ourselves are guilty. You may believe there are justifiable sides in conflicts, but the reality is often far more complex.

Innocent lives are lost on both sides—men, women, and children whose only crime was existing in a world fraught with violence. Their lives can be extinguished in an instant by the pull of a trigger or the push of a button.

Ultimately, there are no victors in war, only those who endure less suffering than others.
