Entering the army base went smoothly. Their military IDs were scanned without issues. Although Lara’s ID was examined, it didn’t seem to alter the situation. Indeed, things aren't always what they seem.
Papa had some acquaintances on the base and suggested they meet at the community center bar. However, they had some time to spare beforehand. Lara and Papa enjoyed working out together, unlike Adam, who detested exercise. While Adam preferred morning runs and weightlifting, Lara and Papa relished their time at the gym. He could take the kids to one of the many playgrounds while they exercised.
They drove off in separate vehicles. Lara favored her F-150 truck, which boasted 4-wheel drive, making it suitable for various weather conditions. It also offered ample space for a large man like Papa.
“What a lovely day! So, shall we start with the elliptical?” Of course, they wouldn’t begin any other way.
“Absolutely!” Lara replied, brimming with excitement, ready to tackle the gym. After the elliptical, they planned to lift weights, with Papa cheering her on and posing any medical questions he had.
It was Good Friday, and although the gym had limited hours, they arrived just in time. To their astonishment, the gym was nearly deserted.
“That's odd,” Papa remarked.
“Shouldn't it be busier?” Lara inquired, and he nodded in agreement.
“Let’s count our blessings for this chance,” he said just before a group of armed men stormed into the gym.
Reacting quickly, Lara and Papa leaped off their machines and dashed behind some equipment, heading toward the free weights. Papa gestured for Lara to grab some weights as a potential defense.
“What’s going on here?” he demanded, his retired military tone reflecting his awareness that this was highly unusual and dangerous.
“Drop the weights,” commanded a masked figure, as the others remained similarly concealed.
