Scare Yourself Daily: Embrace New Experiences for Growth

Chapter 1: The Call to Adventure
Engaging in various action sports has taught me the value of challenging myself daily. Embracing a little fear can unlock new experiences and provide an exhilarating rush of dopamine. This principle of mindfulness encourages us to confront our anxieties head-on.
Section 1.1: A Bold Decision
A friend of mine recently embraced a new challenge during what he called a mid-life crisis—he took up rollerblading. As a skateboarder, this was a significant shift, especially given the negative stereotypes surrounding rollerblading in our youth.
For a glimpse into how skateboarders traditionally viewed rollerblades, check out this insightful video by Jimmy The Giant on YouTube.
Despite any preconceived notions, he was enjoying himself immensely. It made me reflect on my own neglected pair of quad skates, which had been gathering dust after a failed relationship. It was time to bring them out and give them a chance to shine.
Subsection 1.1.1: The First Attempt

We headed to a nearby skatepark, which was relatively quiet. As I sat on a ledge and unpacked my gear, uncertainty washed over me. Negative thoughts began to creep in.
“You’re going to fall.”
“You might get hurt.”
I reminded myself that I had fallen many times before without serious injury. Unlike when I skateboard, where I prefer to go without protective gear, this time I had packed safety equipment.
As I rummaged through my bag, I found a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, and padded shorts. Though my bag was cumbersome, I was prepared for whatever lay ahead.
Section 1.2: Finding My Balance
Once I donned my gear and tightened my skates, I paused to gather my thoughts. Doubts surged—was I making a mistake? Maybe.
I finally stood up. Everything felt oddly unsteady. I reassured myself that I would be fine and began to make cautious movements. Imagine a baby deer on ice—gracefulness was not my strong suit.
Suddenly, ramps I had navigated countless times before loomed like daunting cliffs. I reminded myself that these fears were just illusions created by my mind.
As I gazed at the ramps, I recalled a crucial lesson: lean into your fears. Maintaining a forward posture while skating would keep me balanced, whereas leaning back could lead to a hard fall.
With my arms extended for balance, I pushed off and rolled down the ramp, then up the opposite incline. A wave of exhilaration surged through me. The fears that once held me back began to diminish.
Though some apprehension still lingered—which is beneficial for safety—I had successfully acquired a new skill and was eager to learn more.
I am now officially a roller skater.
Chapter 2: The Journey Continues
By embracing new experiences and confronting our fears, we pave the way for personal growth and excitement in our lives.
