Reflections on Aging: Embracing the Journey Through Time
Written on
The Journey of a Lifetime
As I near my eighth decade on this planet, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had living in America. The contrast between my childhood and the current technological landscape is almost akin to the imaginative worlds presented in "Star Trek" or "The Jetsons."
The Joys of Growing Up
Imagine a life devoid of rock 'n' roll; that was my reality. I grew up in an era dominated by big bands, while adults fretted that the music popular among the youth might lead to societal decline. Elvis Presley, once a figure of controversy, is now celebrated as the King of Rock. During the 1970s, I played guitar in a bar band, experiencing a vibrant musical scene where genres like rock, country, and bluegrass brought people together.
The first video, "Men & Aging - Growing Old Is A Blessing & Not A Curse Embrace the Journey," explores the idea of aging as a positive journey rather than a negative experience.
The Changes I've Witnessed
Before the advent of television, radio soap operas captivated audiences. Shows like "Young Doctor Malone" and "Mary Worth" were mainstays of entertainment. The iconic duo Amos and Andy, portrayed by two white actors impersonating black characters, left a complex legacy that would not be aired nationally again until 2012.
The Space Race
In the 1950s, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, marking the beginning of the space race. It wasn't until 1969 that the U.S. successfully sent astronauts to the moon, an event etched in memory for all who witnessed it. It's astonishing to consider that the technology in our smartphones today far surpasses what was available during those early missions.
The Impact of Assassinations
The song "Abraham, Martin, and John" pays tribute to four significant figures whose lives were tragically cut short: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. I vividly remember hearing the news of JFK's assassination while on my way to class, a moment that underscored the turbulence of the era.
Vietnam, Protests, and Social Change
The 1960s were marked by protests, particularly against the Vietnam War, which became the first conflict to be broadcast into American homes. Returning veterans faced scorn instead of the hero's welcome their WWII counterparts received, leading to a complicated relationship with society.
Family Dynamics Evolving
In my youth, divorce was uncommon among my peers. The 1960s ushered in a shift in societal values, with increasing acceptance of behaviors once deemed taboo. The phrase "Tune in, turn on, drop out" encapsulated a generation's ethos.
Material Advancements
I recall the excitement of acquiring our first 24-inch black-and-white television. The technological advancements from the 1950s to the 1980s transformed domestic life, providing conveniences that reshaped family dynamics and leisure activities.
Medical Innovations
Growing up, the fear of polio loomed large, and vaccinations for various illnesses were scarce. Doctors made house calls, and discussions about health insurance were rare in my small town.
Final Thoughts on Aging
In the late 19th century, there were whispers that the U.S. Patent Office could close because all conceivable ideas had been invented. Yet, life has continued to improve dramatically since then. Comparing 1922 to 2022 reveals remarkable progress, and I believe that innovation is far from over.
The pace of human knowledge doubles every 13 months, igniting curiosity about what the future holds. While my age may bring a sense of loss for future advancements I may not witness, I remain optimistic about the potential for growth and change.
The second video, "Growing Old Is A Blessing | Maria Alejandro | TEDxNewYork," delves into the positive aspects of aging and the wisdom that comes with it.
