Rediscovering Myself: A Year of Growth and Resilience

Written on

Chapter 1: The Weight of Comparison

Are you weary of the constant cycle of comparing yourself to others?

Look at the image below; it perfectly encapsulates my feelings during those moments of comparison: sadness, heartbreak, insecurity, and most importantly, an inability to recognize the potential blossoming within me. Much like the woman in the picture, I felt crushed by the belief that my achievements paled in comparison to those of my neighbors, oblivious to the sunflower of talent and resilience flourishing within my own spirit.

“Today marks a year of feeling like an unemployed failure” has been my ongoing narrative lately. Each morning, I rise, follow my usual routines, and sit down at my laptop, ready to start my workday. Yet, over the past few days, every time I settled into my workspace, I was overwhelmed by frustration, insecurity, and a heavy dose of comparison.

I found myself scrolling through social media platforms—LinkedIn, Instagram, and others—engaging in a process of self-inflicted torment. I would see peers and recent graduates excitedly announcing their new positions at prestigious companies or fellow content creators celebrating milestones like “100k” followers. And naturally, I would spiral down a rabbit hole of despair, much like Alice, but without the whimsical charm. Instead, I would end up feeling grumpy, taking it out on those around me, and neglecting basic self-care routines like meals and hydration.

Before I knew it, an entire month had slipped away. I accomplished nothing, disrupted my sleep schedule, and nearly caused my body to suffer from nutrient deficiencies. Neither affirmations nor meditation could break the cycle of negativity. So here I am, ready to delve into the pages of the book I've titled “A Year of Feeling Like an Unemployed Failure” and revisit a few chapters. I hope that by the end, the title will become a bit more uplifting. So, let’s get started…

Chapter 2: A Year Free from Smoking

Around this time last year, I made the life-changing decision to quit smoking. At just 25 years old, I was a heavy smoker, fully aware of the dangers it posed to my health, especially after undergoing major heart surgery as a child. However, societal pressure and the belief among my peers that smoking was “cool” held me back. A year ago, I resolved to quit, and I followed through! My friends still smoke around me, yet I have transitioned from consuming 6 to 10 cigarettes daily to none at all for over a year. To anyone who didn’t know me well, that might have seemed impossible, but I did it!

Chapter 3: Eight Months of Blogging

In January 2024, I launched my Medium blog to explore my writing potential. I had countless ideas but never imagined that people would actually want to read my work or leave encouraging comments. It seemed absurd at first, but here I am, nine months later, with 25 articles, over 300 followers, and numerous readers expressing how relatable my writing is!

Chapter 4: Recovering from Heartbreak

Since childhood, I witnessed my parents’ tumultuous marriage, which left me with a profound fear of love and commitment. However, last year, I met someone incredible and opened my heart for the first time in 25 years. I fell in love and experienced the beauty of companionship, only to face a painful breakup. Yet, I emerged stronger and still believe in love—a significant victory for someone who once feared dying alone!

Reflecting on just these three chapters, I recognize that I have lived with discipline, pursued my writing ambitions, embraced love, and remained open to future possibilities. I no longer see myself as a “loser” but rather as brave, kind, and ambitious.

Perhaps I’ve stumbled upon a powerful affirmation tool! When doubts and insecurities arise, maybe revisiting the story of your life could offer perspective. After all, isn’t it true that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover?
