The Fine Line Between Pride and Self-Confidence: A Christian Perspective
Written on
Understanding the Distinction
Many Christians, despite their sincerity, often adopt beliefs that can be more harmful than helpful. One prevalent misconception is regarding the nature of pride. It is crucial to differentiate between arrogance and self-confidence. Which of these traits leads to destruction, and which fosters encouragement?
As the saying goes, "The proof is in the pudding." Matthew 7 serves as a guide concerning false prophets, and verse 16 aptly relates to our discussion on pride and arrogance:
> "By their fruit you will recognize them." (Matthew 7:16, NIV)
What kind of "fruit" do we observe? Do individuals in the presence of a prideful person feel uplifted or diminished? When someone shares their opinions, do we feel validated or judged? Does a talented individual help others recognize their own worth, or do they create a sense of inferiority? Ultimately, is the environment sweet or bitter?
Misinterpretation of Scripture
Another frequently misinterpreted verse is:
> "Because of the grace that God gave me, I can say to each one of you: don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to think. Instead, be reasonable since God has measured out a portion of faith to each one of you." (Romans 12:3, CEB)
This scripture promotes the development of character but does not encourage individuals to undervalue themselves. God has granted each of us talents and a measure of faith. A well-rounded person embraces their true potential with confidence, even if it is sometimes mistaken for pride. The distinction between sinful arrogance and healthy pride is evident in the outcomes we produce.
The Focus on Sin
I believe that a significant aspect of Christianity tends to dwell on human sinfulness while often neglecting the transformative power of Christ in an individual's life. It appears that many accept the notion of being "born again," but fail to grasp its full significance. Consequently, one can exhibit joy, peace, and self-confidence while being cautioned against pride. This flawed mindset has, regrettably, undermined the joy, peace, and hope of many believers.
Christianity does emphasize walking in faith, and I agree with that principle:
> "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13)
However, without the hope that accompanies self-confidence, individuals may find themselves going in circles, like a bird with a wounded wing.
Self-Confidence vs. Arrogance
The distinction is clear: walking by faith should be accompanied by both confidence in God and belief in the gifts He has bestowed upon us.
> "Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy." — Norman Vincent Peale
