Navigating Thanksgiving Safely During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Understanding the Risks of Thanksgiving Gatherings
Celebrating Thanksgiving this year requires more than just a meal; it demands a thoughtful, data-informed assessment of the risks involved, especially as Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise across the nation.
One key takeaway from our ongoing research into Covid-19 is that dining indoors without masks poses significant risks. Why is this the case? Because meals typically involve removing masks and engaging in lengthy conversations, which can facilitate the spread of the virus.
During Thanksgiving, we gather with loved ones, share stories, and partake in festive activities, all of which can increase exposure. This year, Thanksgiving could easily become a "Children’s Illustrated Guide to a Super Spreader Event."
So, how can we celebrate safely? First, we must assess our individual risk tolerance. While complete safety is nearly impossible, we can make informed decisions to reduce risks.
Assessing Risk Tolerance
Each of us must determine our comfort level regarding risk. Sitting alone in a basement with a frozen meal is the safest option, but most of us prefer not to avoid family altogether. Finding a balance is crucial.
Once you assess your risk tolerance, consider the following four scientifically-backed approaches to ensure a safer Thanksgiving experience.
- Can Thanksgiving Be Made Completely Safe?
- The answer is no.
- Asking guests about symptoms isn't foolproof, as 40-45% of infected individuals show no symptoms.
- Taking temperatures is largely ineffective, as many infected individuals do not exhibit fever.
- Even testing prior to gathering cannot guarantee that guests are virus-free.
- The answer is no.
- Is Outdoor Dining Safer?
- Yes, but it depends on maintaining distance and family dynamics.
- Remember, we need to avoid both frostbite and Covid-19.
- Eating outside is safer than inside, but maintaining a distance of at least six feet is essential to limit exposure.
- Can Proper Covid Hygiene During Travel Enhance Safety?
- Maybe, but it requires consistent diligence.
- The goal is to minimize prolonged interactions with others, whether in an airport or on public transport.
- Are There Additional Data-Driven Safety Measures?
- Yes, while not entirely foolproof, these strategies can help:
- Encourage guests to stay home from Nov 12 to Nov 26.
- Everyone should refrain from attending if they exhibit any symptoms.
- Limit the guest list and ensure ample space for seating.
- Yes, while not entirely foolproof, these strategies can help:

- The CDC has outlined high-risk groups, including those with chronic health conditions and older adults. If your loved ones fall into these categories, consider opting for a virtual gathering.
Making Informed Decisions
Imagine a Thanksgiving that looks drastically different:
- A limited guest list
- Quarantine measures before the holiday
- Commitment to stringent hygiene practices during travel
- Maintaining distance and avoiding close-contact traditions
For my own Thanksgiving, I’ve chosen to keep it small this year. Reflecting on historical sacrifices during wartime Thanksgivings helps me cope with the current situation.
I trust that as our understanding of Covid-19 evolves, future gatherings will be more typical, hopefully with everyone healthy and present.
