# Navigating the Tech Hiring Freeze: Strategies for Success

Written on

Chapter 1: The Current Landscape of Tech Employment

The tech industry is currently facing significant challenges, leading many to wonder if these tough times are here to stay.

In 2022, tech professionals encountered a turbulent year that seemed unimaginable after the successful run of 2011. From browsing levels.fyi in hopes of finding the ideal job to anxiously monitoring layoffs.fyi weekly, it's clear I’m not alone in this experience.

For new graduates seeking their first role or experienced professionals aiming for advancement, what does this mean for your career?

The Broader Perspective

The outlook is not always bright. The last 12 years represented an exceptional growth period for technology, but we must remember the past crises, including the Housing Crisis of 2008 and the Tech Bubble of 2000. This year may mark the beginning of your first significant career challenge, but it will not be the last. It's wise to prepare for future downturns.

Our achievements can be defined by the equation: Success = Effort + External Factors + Luck

Over time, our expected success can be summarized as: E[Success] = E[Effort] + E[External Factors] + E[Luck]

While we cannot control luck or external circumstances, we can focus on optimizing our efforts.

A Common Misstep

Reflecting on the past two years, I recognized a recurring theme among myself and many peers:

  1. During periods of job stability: I spent a year comfortably in my previous position, where daily tasks were manageable, and I enjoyed camaraderie with colleagues. Free time was spent gaming and socializing, leading to a comfortable but stagnant routine. Many friends similarly devoted resources to leisure activities and dining out.
  2. When actively seeking employment: I underwent rigorous preparation for interviews (which I discussed in a previous post). This intense focus made me regret not starting my preparations earlier.

Most individuals only enhance their resumes or skills when job hunting. However, building the most crucial elements of your resume requires time: - Pursuing an advanced degree? Expect it to take a few years. - Want to excel in Data Science/Machine Learning on Kaggle? It's a long-term commitment. - Preparing for coding interviews? This typically takes several months.

I, along with many friends, found ourselves hastily preparing for coding interviews when opportunities arose, often through unexpected recruiter outreach on LinkedIn. This last-minute approach rarely yields high success rates.

Preparing for the Hiring Resurgence

After the current hiring freeze, a multitude of applications will flood major tech firms. Those whose opportunities were delayed will finally have their chance. With such competition, how can you stand out?

Focus on What You Can Control

This hiring freeze might offer a silver lining: you have the chance to refine your resume and enhance your skills. Others affected by the freeze may revert to complacency in their current roles.

Here are several strategies to boost your chances when hiring resumes: - Sharpen your Algorithms skills: Mastering Data Structures and Algorithms can take up to six months. With most positions requiring multiple coding interviews, excelling in this area is essential. - Expand your network: A referral from someone within the company can significantly increase your chances of landing an initial screening. Consider starting a blog, launching a podcast, attending conferences, or simply networking. - Initiate a significant project: If you have a long-cherished project you’ve postponed, now is the perfect time to begin. A well-executed technical project will help you stand out from the crowd.

Embarking on these initiatives may be challenging, and maintaining momentum over time will be even tougher. However, the effort is worthwhile since most candidates will hesitate to invest the extra work, especially during economic uncertainty.

When hiring resumes, your profile could easily rise to the top of the candidate pool.

Conclusion

The ongoing economic slump poses challenges for all of us, serving as a stark reminder that difficult times are inevitable and can be painful. However, like all phases, this too shall pass.

Bear markets typically last over 10 months, and the Dot-com crash extended for more than three years. As we navigate this uncertain landscape, we should focus on self-improvement to emerge as highly desirable candidates.
