My Daily Essentials for Commuting

My Everyday Commute Carry
The Items I Bring on My Daily Journey to Work
Like many individuals, my daily commute involves taking the train, which usually lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes, contingent on connections. Having utilized various public transportation methods over the years, I've learned that the journey can sometimes be challenging.
Hence, I wanted to share the items that enhance my commuting experience. You might be curious as to why I opt for public transport instead of driving. The reality is that in urban areas where parking is scarce and traffic is heavy, it makes more sense to rely on public transport, especially when it's conveniently accessible.
For those considering regular commutes, the right gear is essential. For instance, since the train station is approximately a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute walk away, I prefer to rent an e-scooter, which I return at the station. This approach not only saves on parking fees but also eliminates the need to lug an e-scooter onto the train. In the UK, personal e-scooters can't be used legally, so I rely on rental options that are part of a government trial.
Using an e-scooter makes commuting much easier, and I find that a decent backpack is far more suitable than a messenger bag for this mode of transport. A messenger bag could be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.
Backpack
Currently, I use the Port Designs Courchevel, a backpack that may not be the most stylish but is exceptionally functional for daily use, especially in the autumn and winter months. Given the UK's often wet and windy weather, I need a bag that can withstand rain, wind, and even occasional snow.
The Port Designs Courchevel performs admirably in such weather, especially with its built-in waterproof cover. If conditions worsen, I can unzip the compartment at the bag's base to retrieve a waterproof neon cover to shield my belongings. The manufacturer claims this cover protects against rain and moisture! Moreover, its bright neon color is perfect for visibility while walking or riding an e-scooter in adverse weather.
I must confess that this bag is not new; I bought it five years ago as a student backpack. Back then, I used to ride a motorcycle to campus, taking about 15 to 20 minutes. Sometimes, weather conditions were so dire that I needed a reliable backpack to safeguard my laptop and notebooks from moisture. This bag has proven to be a lifesaver in poor weather, as I've utilized the neon waterproof cover during low visibility as well. Its durability is evident, as it remains in excellent condition after five years!
The bag features multiple compartments for safely storing gadgets and accessories. The front pocket is spacious enough for laptop chargers and cables, while a smaller compartment above it provides quick access to items I don't use as frequently. The second compartment has several pockets for pens and smaller gadgets, as well as notepads. The main compartment includes a dedicated pocket for my laptop and tablet, along with ample space for additional items like my cable organizer and umbrella.
Overall, the Port Designs Courchevel is a high-quality backpack that serves as a practical solution for commuters.
My iPad Pro
The iPad Pro is an indispensable device for me. It serves as my notetaking tool, diary, planner, e-book reader, and more. I could almost consider it my primary computer since I use it more frequently than my laptop or desktop.
Tablets like the iPad are perfect travel companions, regardless of the mode of transport. I currently have the 2nd generation 11-inch iPad Pro, released in 2020. While it lacks the M1 chip, its performance remains impressive.
During my train rides, my iPad is invaluable for maintaining productivity. The one-hour commute provides me with precious time, primarily used for writing blog posts. I've recently discovered Ulysses, a fantastic app for composing blog content. It allows me to publish directly from the app and includes a built-in grammar and spell checker, though it comes at a cost of around $39.99 annually.
Huawei MateBook D15
I acknowledge that this is somewhat of a cheat because I don’t always bring my personal laptop, especially since I already carry my work laptop. However, I occasionally take my own laptop for video editing while on the move.
I purchased the Huawei MateBook D15 for £499.99, which is quite reasonable given its 11th-generation i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, and Intel Iris graphics.
When commuting, I often use this laptop for editing videos on the go. Wondershare Filmora is my software of choice, and it works well for basic video editing, particularly for someone like me who's still learning. I mainly edit both 4K and Full HD videos without significant issues, though for more advanced projects, I prefer my gaming rig.
One feature I appreciate about the Huawei MateBook D15 is its USB-C charging capability, allowing me to power it with a portable power bank if necessary. Fortunately, I rarely need to do so, as the battery life is decent, and most trains I take have 3-pin mains sockets at each seat, making it easy to use the standard power cable.
Logitech MX Anywhere 2
Although the Huawei MateBook D15 has a decent trackpad, I'm not particularly fond of using trackpads, which is why I always carry a wireless mouse. I've tried various wireless mice over the years, but none compare to the Logitech MX Series.
At home, I use the Logitech MX Master 3, a popular choice among YouTubers and content creators. Its ultra-fast scroll wheel is fantastic for navigating lengthy documents and spreadsheets, and the side scroll feature makes video editing much easier.
The Logitech MX Anywhere 2 is essentially a compact version of the MX Master series. While it lacks the fancy side scroll wheel, it still features a speedy main scroll wheel and side scrolling. The mouse is portable and comfortable, though my only complaint is its reliance on micro-USB for charging. This older model does require me to carry a charger, just in case.
Pixel Buds Pro
If you're using public transport, I highly recommend investing in a set of active noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds. They help minimize background noise, whether it’s loud conversations or children playing. While they might not eliminate all sounds, they certainly reduce distractions. I've used several active noise-cancelling devices over the years and can't imagine going back to regular ones.
Currently, I use the Google Pixel Buds Pro, which I adore more with each use. The sound quality is excellent, and their multipoint technology allows me to connect to both my iPad and phone simultaneously. This means if a call comes in while I’m watching a video, I don’t have to reconnect my earbuds.
The Pixel Buds Pro are lightweight and comfortable, often making me forget I'm wearing them—exactly how earbuds should feel!
Other Accessories
Beyond the items mentioned, I also carry several other accessories. While not all can be categorized strictly as tech, they are still essential. I keep my cables in an Amazon Basics Travel case designed for electronic devices, which conveniently stores my cables, charging block, and small accessories like SD cards.
Living in the UK, I always bring an umbrella for unexpected downpours. I currently use one from M&S, which I bought during a rainstorm when I lacked a coat. It's made from recycled polyester and holds up well against wind.
I also carry a water bottle, specifically the LTT Store model, which is one of the best I've owned. It keeps water cool for extended periods. In winter, I like to bring coffee, so I invested in a quality insulated travel flask from Tesco that keeps my coffee warm throughout the day. Its lockable cap prevents leaks, making it safe to carry in my bag.
Summary
In conclusion, commuting can be quite a challenge. That's why I always ensure I have the right gear with me. The products featured in this article are among my favorites for enhancing my commuting experience.
