Maximizing Engagement: Writing for the Right Audience

Identifying Your Ideal Audience
Before you start crafting your message, it's crucial to consider your audience. Many marketers make the mistake of focusing on those they believe require their products or services. This is a common pitfall, and we’ve all been there.
Your "NEED" audience typically thinks: "I NEED to lose weight," "I NEED to earn more," "I NEED to improve my diet," or "I NEED a tool to help me write my book." It's understandable why targeting this group seems appealing. However, this approach often misses the mark.
Understanding the Shift in Targeting
What if you shifted your focus to those who express a desire? Instead of "I NEED," consider those who say: "I WANT to get fit," "I WANT to increase my income," "I WANT to eat healthier," or "I WANT to purchase an app to assist with my writing."
No need to ponder; I'll explain the impact of this change. By targeting the "WANT" audience, you're reaching individuals ready to invest in their future rather than those who may act only if conditions are favorable.
When someone "NEEDS" to get fit, they may search for budget-friendly solutions. Conversely, someone who "WANTS" to get fit is more likely to invest in quality resources.
The same applies to financial goals. A "NEED" audience often seeks quick fixes and is susceptible to scams, jumping from one scheme to another. However, a "WANT" audience is more inclined to explore options leading to sustainable success.
Choosing Your Ideal Customer
Who would you prefer as a client? Your approach to targeting begins with every piece of content you create. Prioritize discussions around long-term aspirations over short-term gains. Make it clear that your offerings are not "get rich quick" schemes.
This principle was evident in a recent article I wrote titled "Write Yourself Rich." I felt it necessary to clarify the intent right away to avoid attracting an unsuitable audience.
Filtering Your Audience
It's essential to maintain awareness of who will consume your content and actively deter those outside your target demographic. While it's tempting to appeal to everyone, being transparent about your expectations is a more effective strategy in the long run.
