The Evolution of the Forest Service's Approach

Around a century ago, agency leaders established a forest reserve system to protect vital watersheds and forest resources for future generations. Today, leveraging environmental science and various interventions, the Forest Service effectively manages approximately 77 million hectares of national forest land, accounting for about 8–9 percent of the United States' land area. This enables the agency to fulfill public expectations for quality recreational spaces and related benefits.

The Forest Service also promotes conservation easements, allowing landowners to protect their forests, and has recently received increased funding for these initiatives.
