Finding Identity Amidst the Chaos of Motherhood

Chapter 1: Embracing the Motherhood Experience
Recently, I stumbled upon an intriguing post on LinkedIn that has lingered in my thoughts. It was authored by a mother who cleverly revamped her CV, showcasing the invaluable skills she had gained through her journey in motherhood. Her list included multitasking, negotiation, performing under pressure, along with outstanding organizational and time management abilities. Her message was unmistakable: "If you're seeking someone who can juggle it all, hire a mom."
This insight struck a chord with me, making me feel recognized and valued for the often underestimated skills that mothers cultivate daily. Although I couldn't track down the author or the post again, its impact remains vivid in my mind.
The reality of motherhood is filled with difficult choices and sacrifices. Even though I am married, the majority of the childcare responsibilities rest on my shoulders. This often necessitates postponing my career aspirations or seeking flexible work options, as full-time childcare is simply beyond our financial means, and I lack support from my partner regarding child-related expenses.
Reflecting on my upbringing, I recall my determination to not mirror my mother's path. She is indeed a wonderful mom, but her extreme selflessness often led her to set aside her own dreams for the family's sake. I often pondered what she truly gained from those sacrifices. Now, with her children pursuing their own paths and my father not being a supportive partner, I frequently contemplate her journey. As a child, I vowed never to lose my identity to family obligations.
However, the experience of motherhood transformed my perspective entirely. I found myself prioritizing my child’s needs over my career, neglecting my self-care. I gained weight and became wholly absorbed in my daughter's needs—her meals, diaper changes, wellness, and sleep schedule.
The demands of motherhood intensified, especially after my partner departed shortly after our daughter was born. I was left to shoulder everything alone.
My friends often lauded me, dubbing me a “supermom,” yet I felt adrift inside. The realization that I had forfeited my identity filled me with shame. While my love for my daughter is profound, the sensation of losing myself was suffocating.
This led me to question my role as a mother. How could I provide for my daughter with no savings, thanks to my partner’s absence? The financial burden and concerns about our future were a constant source of stress.
Amid these challenges, I recognized the necessity to rediscover myself. It was a formidable task, especially following a troubled marriage. For a time, I felt like I was failing as a mother, with my daughter being my sole source of joy, even as financial worries overshadowed my happiness.
Gradually, I began to approach my journey one day at a time. Each day became a step towards a better future for my daughter, a step towards self-improvement, contentment, and self-love. I started setting small, attainable goals for myself—like evening walks, occasional ice cream outings, or engaging in activities I enjoy. These minor steps allowed me to reclaim a sense of identity beyond motherhood.
The journey continues, yet I am learning to cherish every moment, finding strength in the small victories and acknowledging the remarkable skills and resilience motherhood has fostered in me. I am gradually rebuilding my career, seeking remote opportunities that enable me to be present for my daughter while pursuing my professional ambitions.
That LinkedIn post was a powerful reminder of the worth of the skills and sacrifices inherent in motherhood. It affirmed that while the path can be arduous, the strength and capabilities we develop are extraordinary.
I am a mother, and within that role, I have discovered both my greatest challenges and my most profound sources of strength.
