The Need for Honest Voices: The Case of the Loud American

Chapter 1: The Quest for Change
Many of you might have caught on to my desire to exit the United States for good. I'm currently preparing my passport and contemplating selling off most of my belongings to finance a life elsewhere.
Amidst this preparation, I've been delving into various cultures and reminiscing about a tale my father shared. This story seems particularly relevant in today’s politically charged environment.
The Tale of the Loud American
My father once recounted that in Japan, openly disagreeing with a superior is highly discouraged. The importance of hierarchy in Japanese culture is profound. Saving face means knowing how to tactfully confront a superior who may be making questionable decisions.
The narrative goes that some companies engage foreigners to play the role of “the Loud American.” These individuals serve as the ones who can deliver hard truths to the boss, allowing others to maintain their dignity while still providing essential feedback.
The concept of the Loud American illustrates a real need for someone who speaks candidly, even when the truth may not be well-received. It’s an embodiment of the adage “don’t shoot the messenger.”
However, it’s important to note that this story is more folklore than fact.
Research suggests that the idea of hiring a “Loud American” is largely a myth propagated by Americans seeking work in Japan. Japanese professionals are not merely passive; they will assertively point out flawed reasoning when necessary.
In reality, a Loud American in Japan is simply someone who is noticeably loud, indulging in burgers and talking at volumes that are socially inappropriate. For instance, I would fit the bill as an exaggerated Loud American in Japan.
Yet, the myth of the Loud American bears significance worth discussing. Although the tale itself is fictional, the message it conveys remains crucial.
The Importance of Speaking Up
In our society, expressing our true thoughts often leads to negative consequences for the speaker. To be frank, voicing opinions in Japan might be less hazardous than doing so in the U.S. It seems Americans could benefit from a Loud American more than those in Japan.
As a feminist, I frequently encounter hostility from men. At times, I have to assess whether a verbally aggressive individual poses a physical threat. Similarly, a person of color confronting racism may find themselves in dangerous situations.
What’s astonishing is that many who propagate hate often wonder why they face isolation. Some have been indoctrinated and radicalized due to a lack of exposure to differing perspectives.
These individuals often require the presence of a Loud American in their lives.
Sometimes, it's necessary for a close friend or relative to candidly inform you when you're out of line. Ultimately, it's up to you to heed their advice and acknowledge the truth.
However, embodying the Loud American persona is fraught with risks.
In America, numerous unstable individuals may react violently to unwelcome truths. The cautionary phrase “don’t shoot the messenger” holds significant weight here.
Generally, it may not be prudent to adopt the Loud American role for everyone, especially with misogynists, homophobes, and racists, who are unlikely to be receptive to honest feedback and may resort to aggression.
Nonetheless, there are instances where it is essential to step into that role. For example:
- Addressing a Friend's Behavior: If a friend has said something inappropriate or is heading down a detrimental path, it may be time to intervene and guide them back.
- Reputation Management: If you discover a friend has unknowingly hired someone with a problematic history, it’s crucial to inform them to protect their reputation.
- Countering Rumors: If a friend is the subject of rumors or discomfort, letting them know can provide clarity and support.
- Preventing Harmful Decisions: Adopting a "Warn-A-Brother" approach can help a friend avoid life-altering mistakes.
- Communicating Friendship Boundaries: If someone is at risk of losing your friendship, it’s important to address the issue rather than ghosting them.
Having a Loud American in your life is a blessing.
In reality, it’s challenging to find individuals brave enough to voice the truth, particularly when they fear that their honesty may be unwelcome. Taking that risk can lead to awkwardness and discomfort.
A well-intentioned Loud American is a rarity. If you desire such a friend, consider embracing your own Loud American tendencies.
