Exploring My Key Research Sources for Article Writing
Written on
In the past six years, I have focused on crafting in-depth, research-driven articles, which distinguishes my writing style from others. Research is often more time-consuming than the actual writing process; it involves gathering useful information, which, while abundant, can be challenging to find in a valuable format.
This article outlines the various sources I utilize for my writing as well as for personal reference. The sources mentioned can range from a singular authority to a collection of libraries. Many friends and readers have inquired about these sources, prompting me to share this information.
I believe the sources I rely on are beneficial and suitable for my writing style. However, I acknowledge that these are merely recommendations and not mandates.
Typically, I engage with web-based resources, Instagram visuals, reputable YouTube channels, established media outlets, online platforms, and libraries or aggregators. As a writer focused on politics and international relations, my sources are predominantly aligned with these themes.
The article is divided into categories: sources relevant to my home state of Kerala, those pertinent to Indian news, international news sources, and various aggregators and libraries that can be accessed at no cost.
Effective Research Strategies
How to Conduct Effective Research?
When discussing research, I'm primarily referring to the kind that's relevant to Model UN scenarios. However, even if you're not engaged in that specific context...
News Sources
Kerala
- Asianet News
- 24 News
- Manorama News
- Mathrubhumi News
These four outlets represent the top mainstream media sources in Kerala, known for their strong reputations across India. The big three—Asianet, Mathrubhumi, and Manorama—are complemented by the newer 24 News, which has rapidly gained popularity. Both Mathrubhumi and Manorama also have newspapers recognized for their credibility.
Unlike other regions, Kerala's digital media can be quite biased, so I recommend prioritizing mainstream outlets. A noteworthy Instagram page, The Cue, is also a valuable reference. Additionally, aggregator apps like Daily Hunt and Inshorts can be useful for gathering news from various sources, including English media.
India
India's diversity necessitates a careful approach to managing multiple news sources. I will outline not only the sources I use but also the reasoning behind my choices. 1. Hindustan Times - A well-respected North Indian newspaper with an informative Instagram presence that offers unbiased news and infographics. 2. India Today - One of India's largest TV networks, featuring prominent anchors who provide insightful coverage of political and national issues. 3. NDTV - India’s first private 24x7 news channel, renowned for its strong digital presence despite recent controversies. 4. I also consult smaller outlets like The Hindu, The Indian Express, The India Times, and Times Of India.
Global News
To navigate the complexities of our world, a broad range of news sources is essential. Most of these are based in the USA and feature dedicated foreign desks. 1. CNN International - One of the oldest 24x7 news networks, known for its comprehensive coverage, including its exceptional election reporting. 2. BBC International - Originally a news radio service, now a major global news provider with a strong reputation. 3. The Guardian - A UK-based publication that has expanded its reach globally and is funded by the public. 4. Euro News - Focuses on European news and perspectives. 5. AP News - The oldest and largest news agency, known for delivering news promptly and accurately. 6. Al Jazeera - A Qatar-based outlet that provides in-depth coverage of Asian stories, despite some public criticism. 7. Statista - Useful for obtaining statistics related to politics and economics.
Country-Specific Sources
- ABC News - A leading US source with in-depth political coverage.
- USA Today - The most circulated newspaper in the USA, offering extensive political news.
- CBS News - Offers solid reportage similar to ABC.
- NBC - A well-known source both in the USA and internationally.
- CNN - Renowned for its extensive coverage of US politics.
- NPR - A non-partisan radio service whose podcasts I follow.
- Euronews - A widely accepted news source across Europe.
- France24 - Covers various issues across Europe.
- The Guardian - Excellent for insights into British politics.
- The Independent - Another reputable UK news outlet.
YouTube and Digital News
With the rise of digital news platforms in the 21st century, the landscape has transformed significantly. These outlets leverage the internet and social media for news dissemination, often lacking the structured formats of traditional TV media. 1. The Lallantop - A major digital news outlet with a robust following and engaging shows. 2. ThePrint - A top English digital news platform founded by a prominent journalist. 3. Dhruv Rathee - An Indian-origin content creator known for his political analysis. 4. Soch - Offers in-depth content on Indian politics and social issues. 5. Cut The Clutter - A daily show that dissects pressing issues. 6. Real Life Lore and Infographics Show - Provides informative content through graphics. 7. Caspian Report - Focuses on geopolitics through visual aids.
News Aggregators
These platforms are invaluable for accessing news. I frequently use various aggregators for state, national, and international news, such as Google News, MSN, Ground News, Daily Hunt, and Flipboard.
Databases
For academic references, I utilize JSTOR, Taylor and Francis, Google Scholar, think tank websites, and Pew Research, which offers crucial societal insights.
Magazines
My reading list includes National Geographic, TIME, The Guardian Weekly, Newsweek, The Week, The Economist, and India Today. These sources mix Indian and global perspectives, and I now primarily access their digital versions.
Books
I am an enthusiastic reader. While my pace has slowed due to time constraints, I still reference various books for my articles.
Conclusion
I firmly believe in utilizing authentic and direct news sources and aggregators. I do not support piracy or free-loading; I invest in subscriptions for reliable news outlets. While the sources I shared are well-regarded, they should not be viewed as obligatory recommendations.
There are many smaller, relevant sources that I also reference, but this list is not exhaustive. Feel free to explore these options at your discretion. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and happy researching!
