8 Essential Mac Productivity Apps for 2024

Chapter 1: Boosting Productivity on MacOS
MacOS is packed with various productivity features, making it a fantastic choice for creative professionals. However, several applications can further enhance the functionality of Apple's operating system, providing additional convenience.
In recent months, I have come across several applications that have significantly improved my macOS experience, and I trust they can do the same for you.

At my full-time job, I utilize a Dell laptop from my employer, currently running ElementaryOS. This machine is powered by an 11th-gen i7 CPU, 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB NVME SSD—definitely a powerhouse! However, when compared to the M1 Pro chip, the performance difference is stark. The USB-C port on my monitor disappointingly provides only 10 Watts of power. While my Mac can usually charge it during tasks, the battery life is quite sufficient for my daily work.
Unfortunately, when my Dell laptop is plugged in, it struggles to draw power from my Huawei MateView GT 34 monitor due to its high base consumption. Seriously, Huawei? A mere 10 Watt USB-C port?
This leads me to my preference for the MacBook Pro 14”. Not only do I enjoy its configuration, but I also favor the operating system. Apologies to Linux, but between it and Windows, the latter is the lesser of two evils.
Here are eight applications that will likely enhance your macOS experience:
- Dropzone 4
Dropzone 4 can be obtained from the App Store. After granting necessary permissions, an icon will appear in your menu bar. Next time you need to process a file—whether sending it via email, airdrop, or messages—you can drag it onto the menu bar icon, and a card will pop up.
For most users, the free version's features are sufficient for everyday use. Although a pro version is available for $1.99 per month, which allows for custom actions (requiring proficiency in Ruby or Python), the free version already provides ample convenience.
- Rectangle
If you're working with multiple monitors or a single ultra-wide display, Rectangle is the perfect app. It’s free and fills a gap for Windows users. In Windows, you can easily snap and arrange windows, but macOS lacks this flexibility. With Rectangle, you can efficiently arrange three windows side by side, optimizing your screen real estate.
- Cheat Sheet
Memorizing keyboard shortcuts can be challenging, especially since each application has its own. However, they can significantly boost your productivity once learned. Cheat Sheet mimics the iPad feature on the Mac—by holding the cmd-key, you can access a list of shortcuts for the active application, making it easier to learn and remember.
- AltTab
One feature that many Windows users miss in macOS is the ability to alt-tab through open windows. While macOS offers a similar function with cmd+tab, it cycles through applications rather than individual windows. AltTab bridges this gap by allowing you to switch between open windows in a way that feels familiar to Windows users.
- Numi
Numi is a versatile calculator that goes beyond basic calculations. It can convert units, fetch time in different time zones, and even integrate with Alfred—although the latter requires a powerpack purchase. Numi is free to use and serves as an excellent tool for engineers and anyone needing advanced calculations.
- AppCleaner
When it's time to uninstall an application, simply dragging it to the trash isn't enough, as it leaves behind residual files that can clutter your system. AppCleaner allows you to drag the app into its window, scanning for related files and giving you the option to delete them, freeing up more space than a standard uninstall would.
- Monitor Control
For those with multiple displays, Monitor Control streamlines settings adjustments across all screens from one location. While I primarily use a single monitor with my Mac, at work, I manage three displays using DDCcontrol on Linux. Monitor Control allows you to adjust brightness, volume, and contrast, even synchronizing brightness changes across Apple and non-Apple displays.
- Alfred
Lastly, my all-time favorite is Alfred. Detailing all of its features would require more than this article allows, but it's the first application I install on any new macOS device.
