Enhancing the Amazon Fire TV Remote: Design Insights and Solutions

Chapter 1: Understanding the Amazon Fire TV Remote's Design Flaw
The remote control for one of the most popular smart TVs and portable streaming devices has a notable design flaw that impacts a common usage scenario.
Use Case:
Imagine a user engrossed in a TV show while enjoying a meal. Whether they’re eating with their hands or using utensils, they need to interact with the remote to pause the program, switch episodes, or adjust the volume. Ideally, they would utilize one of their clean fingers to press the remote buttons without needing to interrupt their meal by cleaning their hands or putting down their utensils.
Many people love to enjoy snacks or meals while watching their favorite games, movies, or shows. This often leads to situations where they need to operate the remote with less-than-clean hands.
Identifying the Problem:
Users should ideally be able to leverage the surface on which the remote rests to press buttons easily. Unfortunately, due to the remote's sharply curved base, it tends to tip over, making it difficult to press buttons with just one finger without holding the remote.
The design flaw of the curved back limits the ability to apply sufficient leverage when attempting to press a button with a single finger.
Proposed Solutions:
A simple fix to this issue would be to design a remote control that is a flat cuboid, allowing it to rest securely on a flat surface. If Amazon wishes to retain its distinctive curved design, they could consider lessening the steepness of the curve or creating a cuboidal remote with rounded edges.
Having a flatter back design would enable users to easily press buttons with just one finger.
Chapter 2: Continuing the Conversation on UX Design
Last year, I initiated a Medium series titled “UX Word of the Day,” which received positive feedback. Building on that success, I aim to focus on everyday objects, interfaces, software, and applications and propose design enhancements that can improve user interactions.
