Embracing the Joys of Solo Travel: A Personal Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: The Joy of Traveling Alone

Traveling is one of my greatest passions, as it allows me to explore new places and recharge my spirit. Even a simple trip to a nearby city can invigorate me.

During my childhood, vacations were scarce. My parents divorced when I was eight, and while my father frequently traveled with my stepmother, my mother and I only dreamed of visiting places together. My dad always made sure to bring me back a souvenir, though—a t-shirt to commemorate his trips.

My real adventure began during my dental school interviews. I drove from Toledo, OH, to Boston, MA—a 20-hour journey that stretched to 23.5 hours due to getting lost! I then ventured to Nashville, Detroit, and Florida. While in dental school, I joined the Coca-Cola Collector’s Club, which took me to various states, including Arizona and North Carolina.

Although I adore traveling, I often find myself without a travel companion. I learned early on that people can be unreliable. Many express interest in joining me, but when plans are meant to be executed, excuses often arise. Each last-minute cancellation left me questioning my worthiness as a travel companion. As an only child, I’m adept at entertaining myself, but I don’t wish to do so constantly.

Eventually, I decided to stop waiting for others. I started booking my own flights, selecting hotels, and planning tours. The freedom to travel on my own terms felt incredibly liberating.

Initially, I felt self-conscious being alone in public spaces. I wondered if others were judging me. While that thought still creeps in occasionally, I remind myself that most people are preoccupied with their own lives. Sure, there might be someone who notices the "lone traveler," but their interest will fade quickly, and I’ll likely never see them again.

Exploring the beauty of solo travel

Experiencing new places alone is vastly different from being alone in my hometown. The thrill of discovering a new environment energizes me, and I find it easy to engage with locals. However, moments of loneliness can surface, especially when I witness something breathtaking, like a sunset, and wish to share it with someone. Yet, I always remind myself that I’d prefer to embrace new experiences alone than miss out because I’m waiting for a companion.

I grew up watching my mother express a desire to do simple activities, like trying new restaurants or going to the movies, but she often refrained due to a lack of friends. Now, I have friends who also hesitate to venture out alone.

Traveling solo can be a deeply rewarding experience. Life is too brief to linger in a state of longing. While I acknowledge the value of relationships and the joy they bring, don’t let the absence of a travel buddy deter you from pursuing your dreams. Embrace life so you don’t end up filled with regrets.

Below are 15 practical tips to reduce the anxiety associated with solo travel:

  1. Research Your Destination:

Prior to your trip, delve into the destination’s culture, customs, and safety considerations. Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and the location of your embassy or consulate.

  2. Stay Connected:

Keep your loved ones updated on your travel itinerary, accommodations, and any adjustments. Use social media or messaging apps to maintain regular contact.

  3. Pack Wisely:

Travel light by bringing only essential items. A compact, organized bag is easier to manage and helps you stay focused. Don't forget critical documents like your passport and travel insurance.

  4. Trust Your Instincts:

Always listen to your gut. If something feels off, remove yourself from the situation. Be cautious about sharing personal information with strangers.

  5. Learn Basic Local Phrases:

Knowing a few key phrases in the local language can enhance your experience and demonstrate respect for the culture.

  6. Choose Safe Accommodations:

Opt for well-reviewed places to stay, such as hostels or reputable hotels. Consider the area’s safety, especially if you plan to return late.

  7. Have a Backup Plan:

Prepare alternative routes and accommodations in case your plans change unexpectedly.

  8. Engage in Solo-Friendly Activities:

Participate in guided tours or classes where you can meet fellow travelers.

  9. Stay Informed:

Keep up with local news and events to avoid potential issues.

  10. Use Reliable Transportation:

Rely on reputable transport services. Be wary of unmarked vehicles and unofficial taxis.

  11. Create Document Copies:

Make photocopies of essential documents, like your passport, and store them separately. Digital copies in the cloud are also beneficial.

  12. Prioritize Health:

Stay informed about health risks in your destination and take necessary precautions.

  13. Embrace Independence:

Enjoy the freedom that comes with solo travel. Use this opportunity to learn about yourself and bolster your self-confidence.

  14. Respect Local Etiquette:

Be aware of local customs and behaviors, showing respect for the culture.

  15. Ensure Financial Security:

Carry a mix of cash and cards, and inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any card issues.

And above all, remember to have fun!
