Embracing Life's Challenges: A Journey to Self-Advocacy

Written on

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Break

Recently, I found myself taking an unforeseen break, a result of numerous challenges converging at once. One moment, I was on an exhilarating journey; the next, I felt engulfed in darkness, with metaphorical ghosts emerging at every corner. It was as if I had lost my footing completely.

Have you ever experienced something similar? When everything seems to spiral out of control, and your mind just refuses to cooperate? This year has been particularly difficult for me, filled with unanswered questions. Unfortunately, the healthcare system has let me down once more. Consequently, I had to engage in research, make proactive phone calls—something I wouldn't typically do—set firm boundaries, and meticulously document everything from my diet to my emotional state. The findings were eye-opening, yet I still needed to champion my own cause.

You know those moments when your intuition screams at you to pay attention? I reached a point of exhaustion with the narrative that aging means enduring a lesser quality of life. Recently, I tuned into a podcast by Mel Robbins titled "Hack Your Hormones," which was enlightening. Historically, women have been excluded from critical research due to hormonal fluctuations and the possibility of pregnancy, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of drug interactions and hormonal health. This exclusion, despite women comprising half the population, is infuriating.

It makes me ponder: why are women required to give birth lying down, when it's not a natural position for such an event? Up until the late 1700s, women would deliver while sitting. This changed when King Louis XIV, who fathered 22 children, mandated that women lay down for childbirth so he could witness the process without bending over. Have you ever tried to do anything significant while lying down? It defies logic!

The past few months have left me feeling confused, anxious, and even depressed, compounded by intense hot flashes and sleepless nights. Yet, as I remind myself, I am 67 years old—this is not the only narrative available to me!

All this venting leads me to share that I've discovered a path out of the darkness. If you find yourself in a similar predicament—feeling trapped, confused, or overwhelmed—know that you are not alone, and the responsibility to change lies with you, not the medical professional in a white coat.

Just like many of you who seek a change in life, whether it's a new career or adventure, the power to transform your circumstances lies within your grasp. You must feel empowered enough to take control and understand that you deserve more; life is not meant to be a struggle.

So, how do you rise above life's challenges? Here are my top five strategies:

  1. Trust — Believe that you are worthy of something greater. Reflect on your life and compile a list of all the wonderful moments, no matter how small. If you're feeling stuck, consider doing a timeline exercise to reconnect with your accomplishments.
  2. Boundaries — Clearly define what you want and don’t want in your life. Utilize a calendar system that works for you to help prioritize your time. Remember, saying "no" is perfectly acceptable. Establishing boundaries involves recognizing your values and crafting a personal statement to guide your actions.
  3. Habit Tracker — Monitor your successes and setbacks. Understanding your patterns can provide insight into when you typically stray off course. A habit tracker can be a valuable tool for this purpose.
  4. Breathe — Breathing properly is vital, as emphasized in a podcast episode titled "The Best Sex of Your Life." Focus on taking deep, meaningful breaths rather than the shallow ones we often rely on throughout the day.
  5. Say Yes — Prioritize your own happiness. The key to a fulfilling life lies within you, not in the approval of others. I recommend surrounding yourself with reminders to affirm your worth and commitment to yourself.

Take control of your life and seek support when needed. Don't remain a passive observer; dive in and create the life you desire. You matter, now and always.

Thank you for dedicating your valuable time to read my thoughts. Your engagement—comments, applause, and shares—means the world to me. You are always in my thoughts!

Merry
