Chapter 1: The Impact of the Pandemic on Society

The announcement of a return to remote learning brought tears and frustration to children in my community. The disbelief they felt echoed the sentiments from almost two years ago when a similar announcement was met with cheers. Back then, kids never imagined that remote learning would stretch on for more than a year.

Our children are undeniably different now. They exhibit a mix of fragility and resilience, coupled with increased skepticism towards adults. This shift is a result of the significant trauma they have endured.

Adults, too, have undergone profound changes, though we often overlook this fact. While some have reevaluated their priorities, switched jobs, or faced unemployment, others cling to the hope that we can return to pre-pandemic normalcy. The days of carefree living—where worries revolved only around trivial decisions—are behind us, and it's essential to face this reality.

The belief that we can revert to our former selves is unrealistic. We have all evolved, and it's crucial to embrace this transformation rather than resist it. My social media feeds are filled with optimistic projections about the Omicron variant, hinting at a return to normalcy. However, the focus should not just be on rebuilding our world but on rebuilding ourselves. If we remain fixated on an unattainable past, true healing will elude us.

To progress, we must confront the loss of our previous lives. This realization can be unsettling, especially as we witness children mourning the closure of their schools. Both kids and adults have changed, and as a result, our society will never be the same. Acknowledging this change is vital for our collective healing.

We must shift our focus from the past and future to the present moment. Questions arise: How can we nurture our children right now? How can we care for ourselves in this moment? It’s essential to extend kindness to ourselves and to others. Expecting systems and individuals to operate as they once did is unrealistic.

We should reflect on how to improve our circumstances today. It’s acceptable to recognize that everything feels amiss. Instead of hastily pushing forward, which has proven ineffective for the past two years, we need to confront our discomfort and understand its origins.

The pandemic's repercussions extend beyond mere illness; it has exposed vulnerabilities within our society and ourselves. Simply covering these cracks won’t suffice; we must first acknowledge their existence before seeking solutions.

Let’s concentrate on the present. Yes, times are tough, but each of us can contribute to making them better. Kindness can go a long way. We can accept minor inconveniences—like delays in receiving our favorite frozen pizza—without letting frustration spill over onto others who are also navigating their challenges. The key question remains: How can we enhance today for ourselves, our families, and those we encounter? That’s the essence of making progress—right here, right now.

It’s important to recognize that everyone is facing their own struggles. If we don’t take a moment to acknowledge this, we risk falling into a cycle of anger and anxiety, which will only exacerbate our difficulties. The most beneficial approach is to strive for calmness and, perhaps, find a glimmer of happiness in the present moment.
