Embrace Change: Break Free from Bad Habits and Find Freedom

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Need for Change

The things that cause us dissatisfaction often stem from areas we neglect. As I approach a significant milestone in my journey of sobriety, I'm compelled to reflect on the passage of time and the transformations it brings.

This leads me to ask: How much freedom do you truly desire? The key to achieving freedom lies in this formula:

Nurture Your Mind + Process Your Emotions = Insights that Lead to Action

This concept emphasizes our ability to create freedom by leveraging our internal strengths while managing external challenges. For further exploration, consider reading about it here: The Freedom Equation: How Decisions Create or Destroy Freedom.

Interestingly, many individuals find themselves more driven by discomfort than by the allure of freedom itself. Often, it takes hitting rock bottom to catalyze meaningful action.

Thus, we should pose the critical question: What am I no longer willing to accept in my life?

This inquiry isn't about labeling something as inherently negative; rather, it’s about recognizing aspects we no longer wish to endure or be associated with. It’s about respecting our personal growth, even if it requires letting go of familiar comforts or confronting uncomfortable realities.

Darkness: A Pathway to Liberation

My lowest point with alcohol arrived unexpectedly, in the stillness of night, following three glasses of wine, when I found myself unable to sleep and muttering, “I despise myself.”

At that moment, my self-loathing stemmed from:

  • A lack of commitment to my dreams
  • An incessant expectation for more from myself
  • An inability to reduce my drinking despite my intentions

It was only when I reached the end of my tolerance for this self-hatred that I was ready to stop drinking. The darkness, rather than being a mere absence of light, turned out to be the very source of illumination on my path forward.

Letting go of the familiar can feel overwhelming, and navigating the unknown can trigger fear and resistance. However, these feelings represent temporary obstacles on the journey to personal freedom.

The rewards of releasing what no longer serves us are immense:

  • Lasting peace of mind
  • Reclaimed personal agency
  • Space for new, enriching experiences

As we liberate ourselves from the weight of the past, we uncover clarity and freedom.

Accelerating the Journey to Your Next Turning Point

Recently, I experienced another moment of self-disgust. When those words escaped my lips, I realized it was time to transform thoughts into action. I could no longer remain stagnant and expect happiness.

Just moments later, I found myself on the kitchen floor, surrendering control and seeking help from a higher power, tears streaming down my face. This latest rock bottom isn't about alcohol; it relates to my relationships.

Your next turning point may revolve around your career, identity, or finances. What are you no longer willing to endure?

Remember, this isn’t about judgment; it’s about honoring your unique journey and embracing the liberating power of release.

Don’t shy away from self-reflection or from confronting the shadows. If you find yourself unhappy with an aspect of your life, it’s likely because you’re not fully engaging with it.

Now is the time to take yourself seriously. Stop tolerating the disconnect between what you desire and your lack of action.

For those who feel unsafe acting independently or lack self-trust, seeking assistance from an external source can be invaluable. As I navigate my current challenges, I’ve built a support system comprising:

  • A therapist
  • Two close friends
  • Three supportive sisters
  • A variety of stable communities

This support is crucial for standing tall in turbulent times or moving gracefully through chaos. We all deserve such a network.

I believe we are fostering this community through shared experiences and truths, which ultimately fortify our resilience.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.
