Understanding WordPress

The internet, often referred to as the World Wide Web, is a vast collection of websites that serve various purposes—telling stories, educating, or selling products. Behind every website is a creator, and there are numerous methods to construct one. A popular choice among these methods is WordPress. Initially launched in 2003 as a basic blogging platform, it has since transformed into a robust tool for creating virtually any type of website. Its ecosystem is thriving and continues to be relevant while remaining an excellent choice for blogging.

Having started using WordPress in 2005, I've made it my career, managing eight websites for an insurance company along with other responsibilities. Over the years, I have assisted many individuals in launching their own sites and have become quite skilled at guiding others through the process. If you're intrigued by the internet, websites, or blogging, then this overview of WordPress might pique your interest.

What Can You Achieve with WordPress?

WordPress is versatile and can be utilized to create sites that share stories, educate, foster community, or facilitate sales. It's not just individuals who benefit; large corporations, small businesses, and government entities utilize it to engage with their audiences. This single tool can accomplish a remarkable range of tasks. But how does it manage to do so?

WordPress's design is highly adaptable, and it incorporates a plugin framework that allows for extensive customization. While many enhancements may come at a cost, a substantial number are available for free. Typically, you can access custom software at no charge but may need to pay for support services.

Despite its extensive capabilities, WordPress still excels at its primary function—blogging—without requiring additional modifications. You can have a blog up and running in mere minutes after installation. Imagine if Creed from The Office had realized how simple it was to start his own blog (Creed Thoughts!)—the online landscape might have looked quite different.

With WordPress, you can create straightforward websites featuring static content, add a blog for regular posts, and upload PDFs for sharing.

Exploring Alternatives to WordPress

WordPress caters to a wide range of website complexities, leading to two main categories of alternatives: simple and complex.

Simple Website Platforms

At the simpler end of the spectrum, you have:

  • Wix
  • Weebly
  • SquareSpace
  • WordPress.com

The first three options are hosted solutions, which means you mainly need to select a domain name (if desired), pay for the service, and start creating. These platforms allow you to construct basic static pages with limited e-commerce capabilities. WordPress can also be utilized as a hosted service, reducing the challenges of arranging hosting and installing the software.

There are numerous hosted WordPress solutions available, many tailored to specific niches.

Complex Website Platforms

When it comes to complex websites, integration with other business systems, automated content display, or security becomes essential. While WordPress can be customized for nearly any purpose, several alternatives exist:

  • Joomla
  • Drupal
  • Django
  • Liferay

This list could easily expand into hundreds of options, typically selected when custom programming is necessary for tight integrations.

A Guide to Getting Started with WordPress

Initiating your journey with WordPress is similar to starting on any website platform: begin by contemplating the content you wish to share. Are you an author or artist aiming to showcase your work? Are you launching a niche blog about specific topics, such as the livability of American cities? Are you a resort owner wanting to enable online vacation bookings?

It's crucial to outline your objectives, the messages you wish to convey, and your preferred communication style. This planning is known as a content strategy, and various online resources and professionals are available to assist you.

Imagery plays a significant role in content strategy. If you're keen on displaying your photographs, that can significantly enhance your site's appeal. If not, there are several websites offering free, licensed images for use (Pexels.com is currently a popular choice).

Next, assess your available time and budget for this venture. It’s akin to building a patio: if you have funds but little time, hiring someone might be the best route; conversely, if you have time but limited funds, you can gather materials and do the work yourself.

Learning About WordPress

A wealth of articles, books, and courses exist to teach you how to create a website using WordPress—most of which are just a Google search away. As you seek out tutorials or professional guidance, align your choices with your needs and take your time in deciding. Rushing into the project could lead to wasted resources and no tangible outcome.

The Lifecycle of WordPress Websites

It would be convenient if websites were magically delivered to us shortly after we decide we want one. Unfortunately, the reality is more complex.

So, where do WordPress websites originate?

The creation of a website follows a lifecycle somewhat akin to our own. It often begins with inspiration, perhaps sparked by seeing someone else's website and thinking, "That looks fun!" Filled with excitement, you might tell others about your plans: "This is going to be huge; the internet needs this!"

Then comes the challenging task of defining your goals, figuring out how to achieve them, and putting in the effort to make it happen. There will be setbacks and learning experiences, and the outcome may not match your initial vision.

However, millions have successfully built websites, so there’s no reason you can’t too. With some planning and effort, you may even find the process enjoyable. Just as with starting a family, WordPress is merely one of many paths you can take.

In addition to my work in tech, I also write suspense novels and comedies. I’d love to offer you one of my books for free, confident that you’ll be intrigued enough to explore others later. Sign up here to receive your free book.
