Covid Island Vanuatu: Which Employer Are You?

Written on

Chapter 1: A Personal Diary Amidst the Pandemic

This entry serves as a candid reflection on the current situation in Vanuatu during the global COVID-19 pandemic. I must apologize upfront, as I am experiencing what can only be described as a severe case of frustration. The following is a diary-style narrative about life on this island during these unprecedented times. Occasionally, I will delve into personal matters, and today feels like one of those days.

In the backdrop of my thoughts, I can almost hear my father's voice—a small business owner in a regional Australian town—reminding me of the challenges we face, especially during tough times. For those unfamiliar with the situation, Vanuatu has been somewhat late to the pandemic party, enjoying a virus-free existence for the past two years while grappling with the isolation that comes with being a remote island.

However, the virus has finally arrived, and with it, an increasing number of friends testing positive and entering isolation. The impact on businesses has been significant; I am part of that landscape as a consultant and creator. Today, I’ve reached my limit.

I am frustrated—not just for myself, but for others facing similar struggles. To channel this frustration, I present a list and a challenge for reflection: Which type of employer are you in this time of COVID? Today, my focus is on the negative behaviors exhibited by certain employers.

Exhibit A: In the very first week of community transmission, an employee who tested positive was informed of their termination after raising concerns about the company's COVID-19 response plan. To paraphrase Warren Buffet, "It takes years to build a reputation but mere minutes to destroy it. Consider this, and you might change your actions."

Exhibit B: In the second week of transmission, a prominent international aid organization abruptly canceled a consultant's short-term contract, despite the considerable time invested in online meetings and research. Attempts to negotiate a termination fee for work completed went unanswered. Dear EINGO, I am still waiting for a response. If I see one more post about helping families affected by COVID, my patience may wear thin.

Exhibit C: Just before community transmission began, a job offer for a senior media position in Australia was rescinded after I attempted to negotiate a living wage—essentially, a fair salary reminiscent of what I earned two decades ago. It seems the seriousness of the offer was questionable.

Exhibit D: The excessive hours consultants are forced to put in by large organizations to be included on procurement lists for a nominal fee, which may only be paid months after the work is completed, is alarming. Yes, I appreciate your efforts to streamline operations, but at what cost to us?

Exhibit E: The time wasted on submitting multiple quotes for large organizations, often receiving no feedback, is frustrating. Hello, I'm still waiting for your response.

Exhibit F: The continuous requests for free work—because, of course, who needs to be compensated?—is disheartening.

And that sums it up. The ball is in your court, Marcus. We need assistance. I’ve tried, and today, I’m at my wit’s end. Perhaps tomorrow will be better.

"When you wake in the morning, consider what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, and to love." — Marcus Aurelius
