Apple's Foldable iPad: A Step Towards Innovation in 2024

Written on

The Future of Apple's Foldable Devices

In the bustling months of September and October within the tech world, a significant development concerning Apple slipped under the radar. This week, a surprise announcement from Apple overshadowed other news, but it also gave me the opportunity to reflect on reports indicating that the company is approaching the final stages of creating a foldable iPad.

At first glance, this may seem like mere speculation, but upon closer examination, the idea holds substantial merit. A foldable iPad might be closer to realization than many anticipate, and I find myself intrigued by the prospect.

The Arrival of a Foldable iPad in 2024

The first whispers of a foldable iPad emerged in March 2022, largely attributed to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young. He indicated that Apple was preparing to develop foldable displays of up to 20 inches, likely intended for future iterations of either MacBooks or iPads. While both devices could potentially benefit, the notion of a foldable iPad seems more fitting, blurring the lines between the two product categories.

Although not officially confirmed, rumors suggest that Apple is collaborating with LG to produce these large foldable OLED screens, utilizing an ultra-thin cover glass instead of the polyimide commonly found in current foldable devices from other brands.

Some details about Apple's potential entry into the foldable market remain uncertain. For instance, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculates that the initial device to feature this technology may include a carbon fiber kickstand. One has to wonder just how much Apple intends to charge for such a device.

But what is causing the delay? With numerous competitors already established in the foldable space, why is Apple still on the sidelines? More importantly, when will we finally see this innovative device?

Why a Foldable iPad Makes Perfect Sense for Apple

I don't have the answer to the previous question—it's rhetorical. The truth is, predicting Apple's next move is challenging, even for seasoned analysts and industry insiders.

Yet, the more I contemplate this, the more it becomes clear that a foldable tablet aligns seamlessly with Apple's strategy. It's evident that Apple is hesitant to venture into the foldable smartphone market; their cautious approach to iPhone evolution reflects a preference for gradual and secure improvements, which is why the company continues to enjoy substantial financial success.

Conversely, the iPad's sales have been lackluster for some time. To revitalize interest and boost sales figures, Apple must explore innovative avenues. The iPad, unlike the iPhone, is more suited for experimentation. This is evidenced by previous innovations like the LiDAR Scanner appearing first on the iPad and the introduction of unconventional models like the 10th generation.

If Apple is indeed channeling its foldable ambitions towards the iPad, they are likely on the right track. As someone who appreciates the current lineup of foldable Android devices, I can see the potential.

My Enthusiasm for the Google Pixel Fold

In my view, the Google Pixel Fold stands out as the top foldable device currently available. While I haven't tested every option, of those I've engaged with, it strikes an admirable balance between functionality, aesthetics, compromise, camera performance, and the Android experience.

However, it does have a notable downside. The front display is so impressive that it often makes the internal display feel underutilized—unless you're keen on multitasking or consuming content on a larger screen.

Personally, I find myself depending on the Pixel Fold's front display far more than the expansive inner screen. Is this a case of user error? Am I not pushing the boundaries of foldable phone usage? Perhaps.

This scenario underscores why a foldable iPad may be more appealing to users like me (and likely many other tech enthusiasts). A foldable iPad would offer a larger display while being easier to transport. It could also mean that the iPad's keyboard could finally become genuinely functional. While strong haptics would be essential, the ability to take an iPad on a train without the bulk of a keyboard case is an enticing prospect.

Conclusion: The Foldable iPhone May Never Happen

I firmly believe that a foldable iPhone will not be on the horizon. Apple will not compromise on the integrity of its flagship product, especially with the advent of visionOS and spatial computing.

Nevertheless, Apple must not become complacent. Numerous competitors have already embraced foldable technology, and while Apple often paves its own path, the buzz surrounding foldable devices from companies like Samsung is difficult to ignore.

If Apple decides to forego the foldable smartphone market altogether in favor of innovative iPads, I wholeheartedly support that direction. How do you feel about this potential shift?
